I hula hoop regularly and found the approx calorie burn on a different site a while ago (nutracheck)
They have it in their database as 192 calories per 60minutes for "hula hooping, general"0 -
great fun and a super way to burn calories!0

I just got my hoop today, its really fun, just building it up slowly each day,0

I'd love to hear from someone with a heart monitor! What are your burns and what kind of intensity hooping you do?
I always log it as about 300 calories an hour based on a calculator I had seen on another site.
I would call it moderate intensity while hoop dancing to music, making sure to swing it around with my arms, too, for a better workout.
Have fun! Hooping rules
You can find hoop dance lessons on you-tube for working on your skillz.0 -
what a great idea! I love to hula hoop and I never considered it as a work out option but hey whatever gets you moving!0

I just checked this last night and I compared multiple sites, all which said that 30 minutes of hooping burns approx 153 calories, or 51 calories per 10 minutes. A 3lb weighted hula hoop burns about 70 calories per 10 minutes, maybe a little bit more.0

I actually bought myself a hoop the other day because is was 70p and I figured "why not?" - and my backup plan if I couldn't do it was to use it in dog training instead.
I've never been able to hula hoop, and now I'm 30. My plan for this weekend is to see if I can actually "get it" - youtube, here I come!
Any hints on how to learn will be gratefully received!0 -
Going to run out tomorrow and get one now...0

hmm upon looking at the youtube stuff.. perhaps my hoop is going to be too small for it to work properly as a beginner.. (yes it's a kids hoop from tescos lol, but I thought a hoop was a hoop?!) I'd love to hear people's experiences0
-
yup, the hoop is deffo too small, dang! Dog trick hoop it is then, oh well! :laugh:0

I would buy one...just don't want my husband to laugh at me. He already thinks I'm nutz0

Ok..I bought one. Did 30 mins and only burned 111 cals. I guess because I am slow. :laugh:0

I would recommend checking out Hoopnotica.com for their intro DVD. You can also buy a hoop there. However, check out all alternatives, such as eBay and Etsy. My source for hoops is Rachael of Insidious Hoops out of Geneva, IL. She's on Etsy.
I recommend a anywhere from a 36" to 40" hoop for beginners. In hooping, bigger is better. Your body had more time to react to the rhythm of the hoop, thus, you will be able to keep it up longer.0
