Nike plus on Ipod Nano

I was thinking of getting the new Ipod nano, mainly just for the Nike plus features.
It all looks pretty amazing can track your runs (im guessing through gps), gives you a calorie burn and much much more.

However I am a student and already have a shuffle, £115 is quite a lot for me to pay out for something I will hardly use.

I was wondering if anyone has the newest nano and uses the nike app regularly.
Is it accurate (especially calorie burn and distance) and do you think its worth its price ?

Thank you so much for your help.

I have older Nano (the small square ones) and just a few weeks ago it told me I had a software update. I did the update and the Nike Plus was on there. I absolutely love it! You put some initial information in like weight, age, etc. and then it tracks either walks or runs. The data is distance, time, calories burned and steps taken (at least the walking one does). It has a history feature so you can see previous workouts and it even tells you your personal best. I've totally upped my walking since adding the upgrade to my nano. I do not currently have any other type of band/or HRM at this time.

My boyfriend has a nano (the ones that are colored and rectangular?) that came with Nike+. However I will caution in saying that the distance it gives is not always accurate as you have to hold it in your hand and that is how it measures. We ran a 5k Sunday and my Nike+ (on my phone) matched up distance with the course while his did not because he kept it in his pocket. Even holding it in your hand it can be off.

I generally hold mine in my hand when I walk and sometimes I'll go up to the high school track so I know it's pretty accurate on there but I guess it can definitely be off if in your pocket.

His was off by half a mile I think. When I would use it on the treadmill (going off my swinging hands) it would be off there too.

    Oh that's annoying
  • I haven't used nike plus in ages, but when I did use it, it required the little sensor that went in your shoe. Does it still do that? The sensors used to be about $15 at the sport shop, and conencted to either a little dongle that went in the base of your ipod, or connected without that dongle to an ipod touch or iphone. The shoe sensor was meant to go under the insole of a nike+ enabled shoe (from nike, of course) but you could easily tuck it behind the laces, or buy a cheap little rubber pocket on ebay that threaded into your laces as well so you could use any shoe.

When I used the shoe sensor version it was accurate enough for me. (+/- 5%). I'm not an olympic trainer, so the numbers it gave me were more than close neough for my purposes.

Outdated info, but I hope it helps.

I have a 7th generation nano and it has the nike plus feature. It wasn't that expensive. You can always sell the one you have and "downgrade".

I have been using Nike+ on the touch for about 6 months and my partner has been using it on the square nano for about the same amount of time. Neither requires the use of the sensor.

We find the distance calculation is pretty accurate. If you find it's off you just need to calibrate it. I wear mine in a pocket on the back of my shorts and he wears his on an armband. I've also worn it at the gym on the treadmill with accurate results.

It's nice having the app count off your distance and give you your average pace at each km or mi. Nice that the website tracks your workouts and handy to see your pace.

It does not use GPS. It uses a built in pedometer.

I would say the calorie count is more reasonably set than with MFP or another program I've used (runtastic).

I love my nano and nike plus. I ran with it and my phone running app to calibrate it (did this a few times). Really like that ithelps me with my pace too.
