English Pasties with Beef Stew Filling
I've read about pasties in the past but never had a chance to eat one. So, I decided to make them myself!!
I took a 2lb rump roast, rinsed it and patted it dry. Then I cut it into small cubes and trimmed away the large fat chunks.
Then I chopped half an onion up and put it in a pot with two tablespoons of canola oil on a medium flame.
Then I turned the flame up on high and added in the beef chunks. After I seared them a bit on both sides, I added some seasonings. I added pepper, garlic powder, and paprika, but add whatever you like.
While the meat was searing, I chopped up some potatoes and carrots and then added them into the pot and turned the flame back down low and added a can of beef broth before covering the pot.
Allow most of the broth to evaporate.
While that was cooking, I started in on the pastry.
1-1/2C all purpose flour
1/4tsp salt
1/2C unsalted butter
1/4C cold water
Preheat oven to 350F
Mix your flour and salt together in a large bowl then start cutting in your butter.
Keep cutting the butter in until the mixture has a coarse, breadcrumb-like consistency.
Then slowly add the cold water while stirring the mixture with a fork until it all clumps together.
At that point I started using my hands and briefly kneaded the mixture and formed into a ball.
Cut the ball into 8 equal portions. Take a portion and put it on a lightly floured pastry sheet.
Roll the pastry out into an approximately 7 inch circle.
Spoon the filling into the circle then fold it in half and use a fork to crimp the edges and place on a greased cookie sheet. Cut slits into the top of the pastries for ventilation.
Bake for approximately 35-40 minutes
Enjoy!

This is not fair. You can't keep posting all of this good stuff. I am going to lose my mind. And I think it's cute that you pat your rump dry.0

Mmm! Those look yummy! Do you know the nutritional value for the finished pasty?0

Mmmm, I love pasties. I had a chicken & shroom one tonight for my bait. However, that stunning looking homemade one puts my shop bought one into the shade.0

The pastry crust is around 190 calories, and the filling should add at most another 75-ish calories. So I would approximate between 250-300 calories per pasty.0 -

Oh, forgot to add, don't let the stew get too dry. I did and they came out a bit dryer than I would have liked.0

I think these are just neat! I could totally try to make a veggie one. How did you learn to cook? I'm trying to figure out how to help my husband learn to cook...he needs some help in that department. I'm just not sure of how to teach him!0
