Question on Logging Exercise

Hi Guys

Sorry I posted a similar post in the exercise forum, but suspect I might get a quicker response here.

I walk to and from my office, which works out to about 30 - 35min per day, 5 days a week.

I do a 30 Day Shred work out at least six days a week.

At this point, I've only really been logging my 30DS workouts - would you include the walking too?

Thanks
Jessie

  • Oh also, would you then classify me as sedentary (I have a desk job but move around quite a bit), or lightly active?

This is a grey area - you would probably at base be lightly active, or you could bump that up to account for the walking to and from work as apposed to counting that as exercise, or you could count it as exercise. It is really more of a personal preference thing at that point. Just try to get an accurate measurement of your exercise or underestimate it on the website because overestimating your exercise and then eating it all back is one thing that throws alot of people off their goals.
  • Thanks CD - I've used this app which has been recommended on MFP to get a better idea of my calories (I realise MFP is quite generous with how many calories are burned) and then just edit my exercise logging to reflect the other app.

I suppose I could continue not logging them but then not have a wobbly if I'm over my calorie allowance slightly.

I'd say if you're pretty active at your job, you already have a built in wobbly. If you keep your activity level at sedentary, you should count both the walk and the 30DS. The "circuit training, general" listing is pretty accurate for calorie burn for 30DS (compared to what my HRM tells me) so you can feel pretty confident with those numbers. If you want a little wiggle room with your walk, log it at a slower pace than you actually go (if you walk at 3.5mph, log it as 3mph). That way you're still getting the calories but don't have to worry about overestimates.
  • Thanks so much guys!

For MFP purposes you would be sedentary then log your exercise separately. I always thought I moved around quite a bit at work until I got a Fitbit Zip and realized even on the days I think I'm moving at work I rarely log more than 2500 steps during my work day.
