help required in walking

Hi All,

Its 4 months now with MFP (frankly in any sort of weight loss plan) and lost ~15kgs (33lbs). All because of the inspiration I get here from MFP members, their comments and posts.

Another 10kgs to go !!

I am not an early riser but somehow convinced myself that I have to go for a walk early in the morning and good news is that now it has become routine. I am not a jogger or runner. I like walking and try to walk atleast 6kms+ per day. Some days I walk more than 10kms. All depending on the time I get. I am seeing the results.

Here comes the difficult part...I live in UK and its autumn, cold and wet. I need help/support/guidance on how can I keep going out for walk in the cold wet weather. Outfit is a big issue as need to keep myself warm and away from getting wet too.

Any suggestions on clothing will be great. I dont want to spend too much on it and is a last resort (if nothing works out).

  • this might be too warm, but you could always wear thermals as your base layer and then exercise clothes made out of that material that windbreakers are made out of. it repels water and you'd be nice and toasty. i personally shop at kohls (with their 30% promo codes that you can find online throughout the year), tjmaxx, or ross. I love shopping, but hate spending money.

Dress in layers. So wear a tshirt, a sweater, a light jacket, and probably a windbreaker (which helps with waterproofing as well), or if it's only slightly cool, skip the sweater. I also strongly recommend getting your shoes waterproofed. You can buy a spray or if you need to get new shoes, some stores will do it for you.

Also, don't forget gloves and a hat!

    Hey,

Yes we are having a lot of weather at the moment, here...

Skiers say 'there's no such thing as bad weather - only the wrong clothes'!

The main thing is to keep dry and warm. Like the previous poster said, layer up (and keep a backpack for the discarded layers) Whatever you do, don't buy waterproofs or walking shoes from Primark or a supermarket. You'll get soaked, uncomfortable and disheartened.

TK Maxx is the best place to go for bargain walking gear from reliable brands. Toasty walking socks, gloves and hat make a big difference too.

I walk my dogs all through the wonderful Scottish winter's. Things to concentrate on are keeping feet dry and warm. Hands and head warm. . Your core will generate heat as you walk. Look into some walking boots great support for your feet. You can pick up some great deals on Amazon if you do some searching. A cheap woolly hat and some gloves and a waterproof will make all the difference. Lots of thin layers are best as its then easier to regulate your temperature. Shop around these are bargains to be had.

You could join a gym maybe. If not practical then just buy a water proof jacket and wear it over some warm clothing. You'll sweat too which isn't a bad thing. Whereabouts are you from?

Get a good pair of walking boots - try Sports Direct or Go Outdoors. Layers also work well plus a good windproof jacket.

Joining gym is not a big deal...but utiling is. I was a member to the gym but rarely used it due to time crunch.

I live in Solihull, Birmingham, UK.

A cheap lightweight raincoat from your local supermarket is about £10-£15. A T-shirt and jumper underneath is more than enough,

It's the U.K after all, we aren't exactly in the North Pole.

If you get a little chilly, walk faster. It'll keep you warmer and burn more cals!

I understand this - I run (slow) short distances a few times a week but have been worried going into my first Winter how I will keep up - turns out I like running in the rain.

I have always walked a lot:
Waterproof shoes.... walking boots instead of trainers.
    Layers. Layers. Layers.
Waterproof jacket... can be lightweight cheap thing (I have £5 poncho from primark!).
If long distance and if cold - thermos flask in backpack.
If very cold - thermal under-layer (may be too warm), socks, gloves etc.

Last Winter when people hibernated from the snow a friend and I wrapped up in a million layers (just standard clothes - but both of us own walking boots - extra socks... and both us own thick warm waterproof coats... like ski jackets) and we walked for miles through the snow - it was a beautiful winter wonderland... LOVED it, so much better than 'enjoying' central heating and TV.

    Keep at it - enjoy!
  • Do you have Aldi or Lidl in UK? Because their walking/running gear is great quality and reasonable prices.
