Is it okay to train whilst on anti-biotics?

An unknown insect bit me and I eventually had to go to the Doctor as my calf where I was bitten came up in 100'ds of tiny blisters and the bite was oozing. The Doctor said I have cellulitis and in order to avoid the potential of infection in the bite prescribed a broad spectrum antibiotic.

Today is my 3rd day on them and the script is for 5 days in total. Is it okay to train whilst on anti-biotics?

You should probably double check with your Dr. on this one. If it were me I would still workout but take it easy, your body is not at 100% right now. Might want to look into any side effect that particular one might cause though and make sure they aren't anything that might interfere with training.

To be honest it's the training with the cellulitis that's the potential problem rather than the a/b's. The advice above holds good though. Check with your doctor as they know the severity and if you do train go easy.

It mostly depends on what the antibiotic is, what it's potential side effects are, & whether you're seeing signs of them in yourself. If you feel comfortable sharing which antibiotic, I can look it up in the PDR (Physician's Drug Reference). Last year I had a sinus infection that didn't respond to the first 3 antibiotics they gave me, but they didn't cause any side effects & I worked out while I was on them. I'm a big believer that the exercise helps your body to fight things off. BUT then they put me on a very broad spectrum, heavy duty, last resort antibiotic, & told me if it didn't work they'd have to hospitalize me to give me IV antibiotics. When I picked up the last antibiotic at the pharmacy, the pharmacist (who knew I worked out) looked concerned. Asked if I was SURE they wanted me on it for 3 weeks, since the usual course was 10 days, I told him it was because the infection seemed resistant. He said that I should definitely not work out while taking it, not even walking for exercise, because one side effect was that it could cause tendonitis & tendon rupture up to 9 months AFTER you FINISH taking it. Sure enough my tendons started to hurt & give me trouble, even though I had stopped my workouts. It wasn't until about 9 months later that they felt normal again, where I felt safe to slowly work into my regular workouts again. Now I'm really nervous when I get sick that I'm going to have to go on them again & have another setback on fitness. But it's better to avoid injury, than to push it & end up w/an even greater injury or set back.
ADDED NOTE: You can send me a private message w/the name of the antibiotic if you prefer, for me to check it for you.

Thanks. The bite is healing, but the cellulitis is still there. Today I feel a bit off and I thought maybe it was training whilst on anti-biotics.
  • @ Sharon - Thanks Sharon, I sent a PM as well. The name of the antibiotic is Augmentin (Glaxo Smith Kline).

I don't see any mention of any cautions about working out on Augmentin (which is in the -cillin family). You can check for yourself at this link if you like (regular drug name listed). But looks good to me. On the cellulitis, Live Strong has an article on it & it basically says if your doctor says it's ok to workout, then you can workout. If your doctor knew you work out & didn't say anything, then it's probably ok. But you could always just call his office & ask them to ask him if it's ok to work out. I'm no doc, just used to be a medical secretary so know where to look for info. But always good to check w/your own doc.
