I loved lifting weights but the scales were getting heavier and heavier, I was over 140lbs at one stage,
Now I have been hitting the cardio machines, and doing light weights I have got done to 135lbs.
All depends what you want..........The number on the scales or sod the scales and look really toned??
I find with cardio I really sweat so feel like I have done a good workout when I come out the gym soaking wet, whereas with the weights apparently it burns calories after??0 -
Keep in mind I'm not at my goal yet but these 2 pictures were taken a year apart. The Warrior Dash picture (I'm on the left in pink shorts) is me after adding heavy lifting into my cardio program, I am the SAME weight in both pictures. The Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser picture (again I'm on the left with glasses) was just cardio and diet. Again I am the SAME weight in both pictures. When I saw the difference in these pictures I was sold on going by inches and forgetting the scale, in fact I haven't weighed myself in months at this point.

WOW! Now that is so amazing how you can be the same weight, I am not going to stop lifting at all!!!! Thanks and great job:)0 -
I love you guys! totally rock! I am completely sold and keeping my weight training routine, I was starting to feel heartbroken because I felt that I had to stop them for a while. I am definetly keeping it in my workout routine. I am going to stick with a deficit but take in my protein to keep my muscles there atleast. I am aiming towards 1600 a day, so lets see how that works. Wow Ive had MFP for a long time and never knew there was this much support out here. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I feel super inspired now:):)0

Thanks guys I think ill definitely stick to my weight training routine. Is it possible to reach your goal weight while lifting weights? I can't seem to get out of the 160-170 weight range, Its a bit frustrating. I.honestly feel discouraged
Yes, it is very possible to reach your goal weight while lifting. I mixed it up frequently, but stuck to a routine of Cardio 3 times a week and strength 2 times a week plus one Body Pump Class. I also did(and still do) Yoga that is amazing for strengthening and toning!0 -

Thanks! I'm not saying it's easy or that I still don't get frustrated, we all do at times but not focusing on the scale has made a huge difference for me, knowing that others only see how I look and not what that stupid number is helps too. I'm on a mission to get to my goal so I'm actually about to step up the weight lifting even more next week. I have my first half marathon this Sunday so the past several months have been more cardio/running based and I can feel/see it. I'm starting to look more like that horrible picture again and I hate it! Again, my weight has stayed steady the past year and a half (plus or minus 5 lbs)..... weight lifting really tightens things up and makes a huge difference aesthetically! Good luck!0 -
Hey thanks for the advice on the book. Picking it up from my local library today. It's so true about lifting heavier weights. My coworker and I perfomed "arm exercises" every work day for a month using 5 lb weights. Consisting of bent over rows, lateral raises, tricep extensions and kickbacks and I noticed a slight difference in my arm shape. I started working out with a trainer 3 x a weeek for 3 weeks and she had me doing these same exercises, and more, using much heavier weights (15-30). Well, I am proud to say that my shoulders, chest, back and arms look amazing!!! I have to admit I was afraid of "bulking up" also, but I am a believer now! I LOVE STRENGTH TRAINING!!!0

Be careful about doing too much....For the last 2-3 months I've been doing strength training followed by 30 min of interval training on the treadmill three times a week. I'm currently run down with ulcers on my gums, I've had 3 colds in 2 months, I can't be bothered and I've been snappy. My diet is good. I watch what I eat. I get enough protein, fruit and veg etc.
Why not try circuit training if you want to combine cardio with weights?0 -
If you want to lose lean body mass, just do cardio. If you want to lose fat and keep you lean body mass, you have to do weights. I've gone from 170.8 on May 7th to 142 today and my lean body mass has increased 3+ pounds and I lift heavy. It would be helpful if you opened your food diary so we might help you with your meals, too.
Cardio doesn't kill lean body mass, calorie deficit does. Cardio can be great way to keep and even add lbm.
cardio in and of itself may not kill lbm, but if it increases your deficit and you don't fuel your body properly it will lead to that. Cardio does not spare lbm, even in a surplus you will not gain muscle mass from cardio. It does not work the muscle in a way that strength training does and is needed to build or maintain lbm0 -
And if you enjoy the treadmill/bike? What then...0
