What is your cholesterol?
I just got my yearly physical blood test results, and feel like sharing:
Cholesterol 171
HDL Cholesterol 66
Cholesterol/HDL ratio 2.6
HDL Chol % - 38.6
LDL 93
VLDL 12
Triglycerides 61
Glucose 81
How did your cholesterol changed after you changed your lifestyle?

I don’t recall my exact numbers from a month ago, but I got told to eat more fat….. and I’ve since taken them up on that challenge :bigsmile:0

You mean good fat? Your HDL is too low?0 -
To answer this question, I need to provide a little history. One of the main drivers to my "getting in better shape" lifestyle is wanting to control cholesterol without the need to continue taking the statin drugs.
I began taking statin drugs about 7-8 years ago. My results on the drug (as of 18 Feb. 2012) - Weight 220 lbs
Report Result Reference Range
Total Cholesterol 169 100-199
Triglycerides 124 0-149
HDL Cholesterol 36 >39
VLDL Cholesterol Cal 25 5-40
LDL Cholesterol Calc 108 0-99
T. Chol/HDL Ratio 4.7 0.0-5.0
I stopped taking the statin drug on 1 December 2012 and these were my numbers after approx. 5 months off - weight 231 lbs
Report Result Reference Range
Total Cholesterol 255 100-199
Triglycerides 298 0-149
HDL Cholesterol 36 >39
VLDL Cholesterol Cal 60 5-40
LDL Cholesterol Calc 159 0-99
T. Chol/HDL Ratio 7.1 0.0-5.0
Estimated CHD Risk 1.5 0.0-1.0
After getting three options from the doctor 1. Back on statins, 2. Diet and exercise or 3. death I chose door number 2 and my numbers as of 5 August 2013 - weight 208.0
Report Result Reference Range
Total Cholesterol 225 100-199
Triglycerides 91 0-149
HDL Cholesterol 42 >39
VLDL Cholesterol Cal 18 5-40
LDL Cholesterol Calc 165 0-99
T. Chol/HDL Ratio 5.4 0.0-5.0
Estimated CHD Risk 1.1 0.0-1.
The numbers are moving in the right directions. The war continues...I will do my next blood test in early 2014 and I hope for even better numbers than what I received in August.

You mean good fat? Your HDL is too low?
Yeah. My HDL was abysmal (below the men’s requirement), but conversely my LDL was awesome. That fat macro to me is just as important as my protein. I’m curious to see what my cholesterol is now.0 -

I'm sure you know they mean unsaturated fat only.0 -

No idea what the actual number is, but my doc told me the other day all my labs were perfectly normal and boring but he was glad my weight loss continues. Down about 60 lbs total over a few years since I took about a year off of actively trying.0

That’s not completely true. A little saturated fat is also good for you. Almonds, avocados, peanut butter all contain saturated fats… especially my delicious peanut butter. You’re not supposed to go and face a bag of potatoes chips however and I obviously know that. I’ve been doing this eating healthy and mostly clean for quite a while now.0
