Hey guys

I'm new here and just looking for some advice, basically since I gave up smoking I put on a stone and a half in about two months and while I may have needed a half stone of that I was happy with how I was before and now hate myself and having a hard time adjusting to my new body and obsessing a lot about it an awful lot, I'm trying to eat healthier but I hate most veg and fruits and used to eat so much junk food while smoking but never affected me and now I can't look at a packet of crisps without gaining weight! I've started going to gym and tried a few spinning classes but couldn't this week as I over did it last week and my knee is very sore since so trying to rest it now, I just need advice on how I can change my diet without having to eat lots of veg because that's all I seem to read! And calorie counting goes over my head I've tried but I would imagine I'm getting it way off and find it depressing when I go way over then too!

Any advice appreciated

:)

  • If you don't like fruits and vegetables, you probably just haven' t had them in a way that you like them. What is is that you don't like about them? Do you feel they're bland, bitter?
  • Hey there!

First off, calorie counting on this site is super easy to do. All you have to do is type the name of the food you ate and figure out how much you ate and there you go. The best way to lose weight is to eat at a deficit. Actually, it's the only way to lose weight. Get your logging all figured out and build from there. There will be days you will go over and that's okay. Forgive yourself and move on.

Don't overdo your exercise! You don't want any injuries! Start with something simple like walking or running if you can manage it. And start lifting.

Why people tell you to eat lots of fruit and veggies is because they're low calorie. If you're keeping a good logging record you may even find yourself eating more veggies than you thought you would just because it's awesome to have a plate full of food only to find out it's only 100-200 calories. Score!

TL;DR version: Log ALL your food, eat at a deficit, exercise, and lift. Be patient. Success will follow.

**This is what I've gathered from other posters on this forum. :)

I'm going to agree with her, and since you only have 20 lbs to lose, you don't need a big deficit.
As a rule of thumb, the following weekly targets would give a balance between minimizing these negative side effects and seeing a reasonable weekly weight loss:
    More than 75 lbs: 2 lbs/week
    40-75 lbs: 1.5 lbs/week
    10-40 lbs: 1 lb/week
    Less than 10 lbs: 0.5 lb/week

Thanks so much for yer replies :) I never liked the taste of veg, I would eat carrots and peas but hardly ever take them, I'm a massive potato junkie, I eat way too much of them but they are so dam tasty! I've managed to cut out any greasy breakfast alright and swap to cereal everyday but it is crunchy nut or coco pops so not too healthy ha :) this is my first time on the full site I have the app downloaded and tried to log food one or two days but had to make up my own calories for it didn't really understand what I was doing so I'll start fresh again from tomorrow and try on full site! Also is it 2000 is my daily calorie limit? What should I be aiming to eat??

    Thanks again :)

You don't have to eat fruits & vegetables to lose weight. You can lose weight with an all junk food diet, however... the all junk food diet will likely leave you hungry. If you're OK with small portion sizes for the rest of your life go for it.

The reason you see all the posts re: vegetables (and such) .... people are trying to maximize nutrition with fewer calories to work with. The (natural) fiber in fruits & veggies helps keep me full............you could take a fiber drink ..... in the US one brand is Metamucil.

There are lots of vitamins/antioxidants in fruits & veggies ....... you can substitute vitamins.

Honestly, if there are no fruits & veggies you like ..... you haven't tried enough of them, have not tried them any number of ways. It might take an effort .....but I think it's worth it.

Haha, I hear ya. I am not a big veggie fan, but I do try and incorporate some, more bang for your buck calorie-wise and you do have to think of fiber. Give this a read, in my opinion it's the one of the most helpful threads on here, especially if you are just starting. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1080242-a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants
