How do you come up with a "goal weight?"

I was 128 when I had my first child, and today am at 141. My goal is 125, so I have "three to spare". It was almost 21 years ago that I had my first child, then subsequently had 2 more, but don't want to keep going the wrong direction weight wise.

I started at 150 August 20th and started my plan August 27th, I have not had a Coke (those $1 32 oz McDonald's ones were my addiction) and I have hiked at least 2.8 miles a day or done the treadmill every day since 8/27. In addition to that, I have not eaten over 1500 calories, and most of those have been healthy food, not junk.

I am 5'7" and 42.

How did y'all come up with your goal weight?

  • I always thought you needed to judge your weight on your height, age and how active you are. However my doctor said a person should go by what weight they feel comfortable with.

I used a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator myself though they aren't too reliable as their weights are more guidelines. Somebody carrying muscle weight could be labelled as obese purely for not fitting in a certain height/weight bracket.
I'd agree with Summer and suggest that perhaps just working to make yourself feel as happy & healthy as possible would be an easier goal than a specific weight (unless like me you happen to be carrying a crazy amount of excess weight and need somewhere to start :P)

Wow! You were 128 when you had your first kid? That's OLD!

That said, I just chose an arbitrary number that I thought was attainable.
