Achilles injury

Hi All,

I have damanged my achilles (not majorly but enough that it hurts when running or exercising) and as such have had to stop the Insanity I was doing half way through, and also can't go running or anything.

Can still cycle or swim but these are too time consuming and I have limited hours in the day, hence why Insanity or running was good.

Anybody ever had any Achilles problems, and if they had any tips for recovering?

James

Insanity did the same to me. Fortunately it was just slightly strained and I managed to just take a couple of days off and it was healed enough to carry on. It was my own stupid fault for doing Insanity barefoot! I bought myself a pair of decent indoor workout shoes as my running shoes were useless for insanity and hurt my feet. Since then it has been so much better. One day last week, I did Max Recovery barefoot and woke up with a sore Achilles again the next day. Proof to me that I need to support my feet and ankles during such intense workouts.

Sorry that's not a lot of help for alternative workouts etc but thought I'd share my story. I have one week of Insanty left now! X

Funnily enough mine was caused from doing it barefoot too (god knows why I felt the need to either).

Must have done a bit more damage than you did though. Probably have a lot more weight pressing down on it.

Am following some exercises for getting the achilles back in shape so hopefully they will work.

1 week left of Insanity hey! As Shaun T would say, Dig Deeper. I had to quit with only 2 weeks left so am gonna start from the start again when my ankle is better.

Oh man, to get that close to the end and be defeated by injury must be awful! Wishing you a speedy recovery so you can get back to it soon x

insanity is well known for achilles / knees injuries, lots and lots of plyometrics for users not ready.
add a lot of daily stretching to recover once the pain is gone, in the mean time RICE protocol will help.
ice every 3 hours, compress in between and elevate the feets when you sleep. That should help you get back on your feet in a week or so

You CAN get back to running slowly and carefully if you:
    1. listen to your body, if your hurtin' too much rest up
    2. run some sort of cream on that area - for ex., ibuprofen cream, I have homeopathic creme so I use that
    3. stretch b4 hand, in the middle, and afterwards. like the yoga stretches, "down dog" and "happy baby"
    4. stretch, start slowly, stretch half way, cool down, stretch when your done
    5. i dis- recommend taking NSAIDS which delay healing, but sometimes you wanna run and so you have no choice, I understand that
    6. think about this: the incline on the treadmill, im not sure its a good idea (it maybe a stupid idea) but I put the incline on 1.5% then 3.5% then 4.5% (and maybe 6% soon) cause I think its a gentle stretch, but im no Xpert so use your own judgment if this is a good idea or not
  • I have issues with my achilles too, usually due to running. In my experience, frustratingly, the only thing one can do is rest up and wait it out. Which is irritating, but of course better than damaging it permenantly. Still desperately hoping to hear of a better long term way to solve the problem though...
  • Oh- icing it regularly helps, as do certain stretches. If you put 'achilles tendon stretches' or something similar into youtube you'll get a lot of instructional videos showing you how to stretch out the tendon and the muscles around the are, which will help it recover quicker.
