tracking for all but dinner...

Back when I lost 80 pounds (before I got pregnant and gained it all back, wah) I tracked for the first month pretty religiously then started just tracking the day until dinnertime, when it got too hectic with the kids to write everything down.
I usually ate only half my calories until then, leaving half for whatever I ate at dinner. This actually worked pretty well, so I think I may intentionally do it again (after I track everything for awhile just to make sure I am on the right path).
Does anyone else do this?

I do the same thing - I usually make a loose plan for dinner though, but leave enough room in case things change, since dinner's my biggest meal of the day. I've found it works well that way.0

I sometimes do this on weekends, usually because I get so caught up in what I'm doing that I forget to log it. However, I usually remember as I'm going to bed on Sunday, and I go and back-track it.
I've done it intentionally in the past on weekends because I knew my weekend dinners would put me over calorie goal, however lately I've been very diligent about logging ALL calories consumed...it's not like NOT tracking food means it doesn't count. I LOVE the MFP app on my phone, because if something changes from my dinner plans, I can just update it while the food it cooking or even while I'm eating.
I like to pre-log my food for the day (I usually know what I'm having for dinner) and if something changes, I just go back in at bedtime and update.0 -
Usually when I do this I eat a lot less throughout the day to be safe (only if I'm going out to a restaurant, friends place, etc.)0

I don't... I don't do well with that little structure. I'd just end up using it as an excuse to be able to eat everything in the house.
If discipline and control aren't a problem for you, then go for it.0 -
I really don't understand how this makes sense. Unless you are accurately tracking all of your food, you really have no idea what your totals are for the day... You may be over or under. You really don't know. I suppose if you are getting good results, then god bless, but it's really not how this system is designed to work. Good luck!0

I do this more on weekends - b/c of schedules, spontaneous plans... whatever. But how many calories do you eat for your day before dinner and what is your goal # for the day? Just curious....0

No, because I know that undereating can be just as detrimental to my goals as overeating.0
