Low Sodium Foods? Such a thing as low sodium fast food?

For the most part I do ok with salt during the week when I'm home, and eat at home, though sometimes its still a little high. What are some low sodium meal type foods?

Also is there any fast food that is low sodium, I have a hard enough time keeping my calories low, but on days I'm out all day, fast food is usually my only option, or not eating at all.

Oh, and does anyone have any idea of healthy snacks that can be left in the car, that won't melt or go bad?

Fast food is just that fast, which means its prepared and preserved and basically heated up when you order it, so no there isnt going to be any "fast" food that is going to be low in sodium

When I'm on the go, I usually take oats with me in a container with splenda brown sugar and cinnamon. than I just add hot water. If your out and about just put the container in your purse every fast food place can give you some hot water to mix it together and if you buy one minute oats just let it sit for a minute and it will cook it. Also, nutibar is a good snack if you leave it in your car usually. I also keep rice thins or crispy minis on hand because they are low fat and filling as well. Good luck!
  • I try to keep a Clif or Luna bar in my purse when I'm on the run all day. If I do stop somewhere to get a drink I will stop at McDonald's and get an unsweetened tea and a fruit & yogurt parfait. Also try keeping some 100 calorie packs (still higher on sodium) in your car. Now that the weather is cooler (well its getting there for us), maybe keep some whole grain tortillas and peanut butter with you? Make a little wrap, throw it in a bag, in the purse?

If you're not going to be gone ALL day (only a few hours) maybe invest in a cooler lunch pail and throw some cooler things in there with an ice pack? I did that with my husbands lunches, he'd leave for work at 530am and have lunch around noon.

    Good luck!

I can't think of any low sodium fast food.... Subway has some sandwiches that are probably lower sodium than you would find at any other fast food place, but its still kinda high.

As for snacks - nuts are good and won't melt or go bad in the car. Or maybe some pretzels. Apples and oranges too if you aren't leaving it in the car for hours, or you could just throw it in your purse.

If you must eat at a fast food restaurant--with the lowest sodium counts at 1200mg per food item, it seems--I suggest drinking about 16 cups of good, clean water to flush out the sodium. Drink about one cup an hour, or so. Yes, you will live on the toilet that day, but your body will thank you. :drinker: (water)

I think a lot of fast foods are high in sodium. Snacks, though, you can vary up a bit. I snack on goldfish crackers, peanut butter and apple slices, wheat thins (sometimes with pb), nuts, etc. I found that an apple and one of the 'to go' peanut butter servings will fill me up for lunch with nothing else alongside it.

Ya, its mostly when I work a wedding, which an be every weekend depending on the month. I'll be up at like 7am (to photograph the girls getting ready), and not home again until sometimes after midnight, depending on the reception. And since I'm with the bride or couple all day, usually the only time I have to eat is on the way there, sometimes 10 min in between places (like driving from the hotel to ceremony etc), or and then eating whatever is at the reception...which to be honest is never healthy or low calorie...because they want they're guests to enjoy the food lol. So fast food it is like 99% of the time. I managed to make a little list of foods that will keep me under my calories that I can shove down in like 5 min, but most of them skyrocket my sodium.

I'm a photographer too! I tend to pack protein bars and snacks with me when I have a shoot instead of picking stuff up on the way - sometimes it's inevitable, so just beware and avoid it when you can! see if you can make a sandwich and pack a lunch the night before that you can bring with you! good luck :)
