went to the mall for shopping and spent 3 - 4 hrs there. logged in an hour as slow wallking ( 2mph)...to add to the numbers i can eat today. ha ha...is tht cheating???? or innovative manipulation???

I do that all the time, though tbh my activity profile is set to sedentary so surely its ok? haha0

I personally only count actual workout sessions as workouts and I only log those as such. All the other stuff is just "extra" for me. I don't count cleaning, yard work, etc. I account for those things in the settings by saying that I am "lightly active" rather than "sedentary."
If you are saying you are lightly active...and then adding those calories on top of that...yes, that is cheating as you are basically counting those calories twice.0 -
I wear a pedometer so we count all walking as part of what we do. We set ourselves as sedentary to account for just walking around the house and doing normal house stuff. When I go shopping I can easily travel 2.5 to 4 miles on a shopping trip (Costco, BJs + the Mall and it eats up a lot of steps especially if you park toward the back of the lot).0

Nope, not cheating! I'm set to lightly active due to my job and light weekly exercise goal, so I usually do not eat back my light exercise activity. But you certainly CAN and if I did heavy exercise that really burned calories (outside my normal weekly range) I would definitely eat back some of the calories to fuel my body properly.
The caution point here, and many would agree, is that MFP over-estimates our calorie burns with the activities. So maybe eat back 2/3rds to 75% of the exercise calories and you will be safe.0 -

I have my profile set to sedentary but after wearing a pedometer for a week I realized I walk an average of 2 miles daily at work, so I do log that.0

If I felt like I got some exercise, I log it - but if it's something minor or that I did without actually 'working out', I don't eat those calories back. That way, I feel like I'm keeping up with my activity level, but I'm not cheating if I don't use the calories to eat, right? At least, that's how I feel.0

Well walking at that pace will not raise your heart rate enough. Also, when you do log long workouts, you have to factor in what you would have burned already. Example: I workout for 90mins and burn 1400 calories. But with my BMR I would have burned 105 just by sitting still (70/hr). Therefore, I subtract the 105 from my workout. Now if you only walk 2mph, you aren't burning much more than sitting. So I personally wouldn't log something like that.0

To each his own. Do you walk or move around like that everyday? If so, then I would not say it will work well for you. It shuold be part of a TDEE. If you don't, then it might count.
Just don't post a thread later complaining about how you aren't getting results if you keep doing this, and find you gain weight, or don't lose any.
I only count my workout sessions, anything small like this, I would take as bonus burn, and not count it personally.0 -

*usually* I don't count that kind of activity, but if it's prolonged I will. I was at the fair for 4.5 hours last week and counted 2 hours of 2mph walking...since I didn't continually walk the whole time (as I'm sure you didn't-trying on clothes or what not).0

In my opinion, sorta. the only time I ever logged some sort of exercise from walking around was when I spent 9 hours at Disneyland. And I only logged 50 minutes of walking liesurely. But I don't workout so I can eat more....I workout so I can lose weight.0

I do think it depends what you have your account set to. If you're doing something that's significantly outside of your daily activities, I would log that. During the school year, for example, I'm almost always just sitting, so I set my account to sedentary. So when I spend a day cleaning or shopping, I do log that. I do usually log it for a lot less time than I actually spent, just to make sure I'm not getting an exaggerated number (4 hours of shopping as 1-2 hours of walking). However, during the summer, I work retail, and set my account to lightly active, in which case I don't log things like cleaning and shopping. I just assume they're included in my account settings.0

If I am on my treadmill at #12 incline and walking fast at 4 mph I can easily burn 600 calories/hr so 1400 at 95 minutes isn't impossible, just extremely hard.0

If you want to gain weight or plateau, then yes log and eat back exercise calories for leisurely strolling around a mall while shopping. Personally, I would not. If I'm walking a long distance at a quick pace, then yes, I'll log that.
Also, I personally burn at max 400 cals/hr doing vigorous exercise. 1400 cals/90 mins does sound a little unrealistic unless it is a very large person.0 -
I logged that kind of thing for a year when I had my profile set to sedentary, and it didn't hinder my weight loss.
Now I've got my profile set to lightly active and I no longer log incidental walking.
If it makes you happy to log it, go ahead.
In a month or two if you are losing weight too quickly or not quickly enough, you can reevaluate your habits.0
