What's in your closet?

Last week, I began the arduous task of cleaning out my closets and going through clothes. I began with a sense of excitement and delight (the weight is coming off - I can get rid of some of my "fat" pants), but I now feel "stuck." I've got every size from 8 to 20W and what an experience as I sort, re-sort, and shuffle garments into different piles. It's like reliving the last 15 years of my life and the emotions are all over the place - it's as if each piece of clothing holds an emotional vibration and my reactions are all over the place.
No, better not throw this pile out, I might regain the weight. (Scary thought!)
Donate all to charity. Who needs all this old stuff! (Brave thought!)
Ugh! Why in the world did I buy this ugly thing? Oh, right, because it was the only thing in the store that fit! (Sad thought.)
Oh, I forgot I had this - what a beautiful dress! Will I ever get back in to a size 10? (Another scary thought!)
Is this my "style"? I don't even know what my "style" is at this point! (Very confused thought!)
Get the picture? It's an emotional roller coaster that's messing with my head!
Has anyone else had this same experience or is my brain shorting out? How did you go about ridding yourself of clothes that no longer fit? Did you just toss them or give them to charity, or did you have a ceremony and spin it in to something positive and affirming? Did you have to wade through emotion to get this job done?
Any comments, ideas, or advice? Much obliged!

I just started today so I don't really know what you're feeling. I do know the opposite end...getting rid of smaller sizes. I did go through that. I think it's best to get rid of all the clothes that are outside of your healthy weight range. That way you are saying you're only accepting healthy sizes. I expect the size 10 dress is okay and if you like it keep it. Any of the sizes that you wore where you were still in an unhealthy weight range need to go. Donate them. Don't do it in a hurry but go through the emotions. Feel what you need to feel and then move on. Oh, and good luck!0

I keep classic stuff: black, gray, navy pants in good fabrics, simpler blouses, shirts, jackets. I find if I have a lot of basic classics than I can shop to buy pieces which can build on those.
My filter is: Does this piece make me feel good? If it doesn't, out it goes.0 -
I'm a minimalist in general and have no problems getting rid of things I don't use. Over the summer, I purged my closet of all of the clothes that was more than one size too big (which was literally probably 90% of what I had). I have a few work outfits, one pair of jeans, and a couple of casual shirts that kind of fit, but I'm hesitant to buy anything I'll only wear for a month or two at most. So basically, I'm wearing just a few things all of the time.
I started at a size 22 and am now in a 14 bottom/16 top. I plan to go on a huge spree over the next few months to replace everything, and then, since I'll be too poor to do that again anytime soon, I will be forced to remain whatever smaller size I buy.0 -
Don't loose sight of reality...the clothes are replaceable " things ". What you are achieving for your health and wellbeing is what truly matters. Maybe the clothes sort acted as a needed catalyst for you to sort more than clothes. Sounds to me like you are now ready to move forward to your lighter, healthier future !0

Thanks, everyone. Just surprised at the emotion of it all. Here we come, Salvation Army!0

I am NOT a minimalist, and I'm actually too scared to start clearing out my closet because I'm worried that once I take out the stuff I don't really like, and the stuff that doesn't really fit, then I won't have anything left! LOL
I say definitely get rid of the things that are too big - don't give yourself permission, even subconciously, to go back there again. Make sure it goes to a good home, and if there are pieces there that you still love, maybe get them altered?
I think you should keep the things you love that are a little too small, and make that your goal clothing - imagine the feeling of being able to fit into that again :-) Something to work towards!
And it's okay to do it a bit at a time... it doesn't have to be done all at once. You could even start with three piles - "definitely give away", "definately keep" and "not sure - go through later". Might make it a bit less traumatic. If it all gets a bit too much, go out for a walk somewhere uplifting like on the beach for some fresh air, endorphins and to reset your thinking.
As for the emotions, I think it's quite normal - just don't dwell on them for too long. Maybe you could have a trusted and positive friend come over and give you a hand? They could give you honest opinions on whether something is worth keeping, be a listening ear for the venting that you need to do about how you are feeling, and be there to put a stop to any negative downward spirals you might find yourself in. We all need a little encouragement now and again!
And whatever happens, just remember this... You have done an awesome job, you should be really proud - we all know how hard it is to get started on the weight loss path! You will get through this part of the journey, so just hang in there!! We're all cheering for you from all over the world! :-) *sending positive thoughts from New Zealand* :flowerforyou:0 -
a lot of clothes that are huge on me. I can't afford to buy new ones. I just bought a pair of jeans which sorta fit okay. But the problem is that my belt is too big. I realize that I need to buy SOME stuff. But its so stupid...they should invent clothes that auto fit. lol.
What really chaps my *kitten* is I bought this leather jacket last year and now its kind big. Its not ridiculous. But in a month or so I'll have to donate it or something...
I'm not even done yet and I went from a 18 bottom > 12 bottom
xxl top > L top.
Bra size down to C. Which poses another problem since I'm broke.

Get rid of the stuff that's too big! Just do it. Give it to a friend or donate to charity. You don't need it anymore.
Keep the stuff that fits RIGHT NOW in your closet and put anything too small in a bag for later - 'cause you WILL need it later! If you want, keep something out for inspiration. Simple as that!0 -
I cleaned my closet today, too! Out went the big pants...I hope I never see them again! Found some shirts that I can wear again now that the waists aren't so tight. I found about 8 pieces that might be resalable... the rest...ehhh. I felt so good to see the closet pared down and tidy, I even vacuumed the carpet and removed all the extra hangers. Now there is room for new clothes!!!:bigsmile:0

Definitely get rid of the clothes that are too big for you. To me, it's such a motivation to be able to say "I don't fit these anymore" and I have no trouble throwing them out. Clothes that are not flattering shouldn't even enter your closet. Every time I lose more weight, I have to reassess what goes and what stays and I am also looking forward to buying a whole new wardrobe. You can do it! It will help keep you on track when you notice your clothes are getting too tight for you.0

Too big = toss. If it's something too small for you but you are motivated by it as you lose weight, then by all means keep it. Otherwise, I have no use for anything that doesn't just fit me well now but is also flattering, still stylish, and comfortable. I hate thumbing through clothes that I can't/won't consider wearing. Getting dressed has to be easy for me!0

Congrats on your loss so far! Maybe Ebay. I recently sold all my big jeans and will do it again when these get to big. Feels good to get rid of them!0

Haha yes!! I say out with the old and in with the new!! Its WAAY to easy to get caught up in the emotions of old clothes...better to just set it free0

I moved from a house with a giant walk-in closet (I had about 20 feet of closet just to myself) to a house with about 4 feet of total closet space-mostly under eaves so not really even 4 accessible feet. I had no choice but to ditch everything that didn't fit. I didn't have anything too small, but it didn't really do anything emotionally to ditch the rest. But, I was packing and tossing stuff like a mad woman, so it may have just gotten lost in that shuffle. Goodwill got all my clothes, and I have not missed them at all.0

that's rather personal.0

I have sold a few better pieces on trade me, 2 pairs of not your daughter jeans and replaced them by buying second hand off same site... Trade me is the New Zealand version of eBay, the up side is I sold my old pairs for more than I brought. My new secondhand great condition pairs...lol... Still have a few good quality tops to sell as well. But just need to find time to sit down and list them.0

A bunch of skeletons and an old Halloween costume. It's a Care Bear costume. Don't judge me.0

I used to hold on to clothes...until I discovered that I could buy items that fit me better and cost a LOT less at the local thrift store. Now I regularly purge my closet and give those items to friends or donate them.
My mom always taught me that the clothes that you are not wearing that sit in your closet could be a blessing to someone else.0 -
i got rid of a lot of clothing before I moved last year, stuff that was too big or that I've had for years. I saved a few pairs of dressy slacks and some capris that fit before I moved. I went into my storage to grab them out this summer and they are all way too big! its a great feeling to know my body has changed that much but it sucks because the capris were like brand new and too tight when I packed them and falling off when I tried them on again. I never really got to wear them! I only had one good pair of jeans all summer and finally gave in and bought another pair last week. but I think with a good belt i'll be able to wear them for another 20-30 lb loss lol. but my advice is- JUST PITCH IT!!! its only clothes. let someone else take advantage of your weight loss0

Until this current weight loss, I would never get rid of any clothes. I would pack them away in space bags and store them in the basement. I am talking about 15 years worth of clothes I wouldn't want to wear now anyway.
This summer I finally parted with most of them (there were a few things that still looked current). I am so used to wearing stretch denim and now the fit is so different that the old clothes just were not comfortable even if they were the correct size. .
I was always worried about what if I gain the weight back. This time I will not accept that as an option. I recommend not keeping any of them. It will feel great to move on an know you are not going to turn back.0 -
I have rejoiced in shoving my old clothes in a garbage bag (bound for Goodwill) as I get too small for them. I still have some of my suits and dressy things to clean out of my closet. I have kept a few of my cotton dresses as pajamas because they are comfy, but I think I might ditch them for pajamas that fit when I reach my goal.0
