Can metabolism increase suddenly?

I have exercised a fair bit over the past week doing alot of calistehenics, HIIT and general cardio. I haven't been burning crazy amounts though normally between 300-6000 calories, and i have eaten my calories back more often than not. However today i have been so hungry i cannot tell you, tried to eat healthy foods but i feel so hungry and my stomach is growling at me. Not sure whether to eat as i'm already way over calorie allowance? Has my metabolism increased and i need this extra energy? or is my body playing tricks on me?
Any advice would be appreciated?

Sounds like your giving in to temptation, I take it you mean 300-600 not 6000 calories, I do 2-3 hours cardio 1200 to 1800 calories 6-7 days a week and struggle to eat my net calories.0

Yes, but it's unlikely yours did0

Why is it unlikely mine has, just out of interest?0 -

Simply feeling hungry and or some extra energy isn't a very good indication of metabolism increasing0 -

Wow 2-3 hours of cardio 6-7 days a week??? Why?
Because I spent 2 years on steroids following an illness and ballooned to 322 lb, also recovery and long periods of inactivity left me so short of breath after minor exertions. I started slowly but increased and have found a level at which I can see the benefit and suits me so Why not?0 -

Fair enough, any idea what could be going on I've increased my workouts from 2 x per week to 5x. is it just a case of my calorie allowance being too low. I'm 5'7 178 lb f?0 -

It doesn't matter where the net calorie goal is for the day, because if you do more, you eat more.
so it should not be too low unless you are not following the program.
Your body could also being trying to make some improvements, which exercise has been known to do, and it wants some extra food for that. Body improvements rarely have weight loss as side effect, but gain.
Or, you've had several big meals/snacks of mainly carbs, got a slight blood sugar dip, and merely feel hungry from that.
Or your daily activity outside exercise increased too, and your base level of perhaps sedentary is indeed NOT correct.0 -
I don't think your metabolism is increasing, I think your activity is just calling for more calories. 1600 calories a day to me is very low for the energy demands you are putting on your body.
Try something like this...
5'7"
178 lbs
Desired weight loss about 30lbs
Exercise 3-5 times per week
178 x 10 x 1.55 (activity factor) = 2759 - 900 (maximum deficit) = 1859 TDEE
I recommend you eat 1859 calories per day minimum.
As you get leaner reduce your deficit since you will have smaller fat stores to draw energy from. Multiply the weight you need to lose by 30 or, if you know your body fat level, figure out how much fat you are carrying and multiply that number by 30.
Hope this helps...0 -

I just looked into this last night. I think my net has been to low and in turn my body has stopped shrinking. So I am raising the bar and eating more to see if there is an improvement.0 -
i think my metabolism has definately increased just put my hrm on for 20 mins at rest and have burned 50 kcals --!!0

Did you do it before to have something to compare? Or you are basing the idea that is a high number compared to what?
Doesn't matter.
The formula for calculating a calorie burn from HR is based on the HR being in the aerobic range, from 90 to 150-170, for steady state, so same HR for 2-5 min, and aerobic, not anaerobic.
Since you were way under exercise level just resting, inflated calorie burn.
You can get an increased metabolism burn if you did a good strong lifting workout, for up to 24 hrs or longer, while body is repairing. But that would never show up with a higher HR, as your resting HR can more than take care of those needs.0 -

Why is it just women? Men have days like this too. I ate something like 5000 calories on Saturday and I was still hungry. It was like a bottomless pit. It happens once every few weeks for me. I just go with it and call it a refeed day.0 -

Something really strange is going on though im slightly worried. i couldnt sleep last night and my stomach was growling all night, i was sweating and really uncomfortable.
Got up at 6 am (normally its a struggle to get up at 7.15) Just to eat. I had 3 egg omellette feta cheese spinach mushrooms 2x slices of bread and still feel hungry. I really dont know whats going on. Im trying to feed my body protein and vitamin rich foods but still can't shake this hunger.
Read up up hyperthryrodisym and hypoglycemia but surely 1 week of upping my exercise and lowering carbs slightly shouldnt cause this.0 -

And shark week is notorious for turning women into feeding machines.
To the OP, this happens to me occasionally. Sometimes its the day after a hard workout, sometimes I'm just starving the entire day. I just try to keep as close to my calorie goal as I can and ride it out. Your body does odd stuff, I don't think it's anything to worry about.0 -

I'm with this guy. All sorts of psychological dramas kick in if you feel deprived. Easier just have a decent feed and then jump back on the wagon the next day.0 -

I'm your height and weight twin and I work out about 5 days a week too (mostly weights, some yoga and cardio though).
I can't stick to a calorie goal of less than 1800 calories a day, and truthfully, the average over time is more like 1950ish, because of a few days here and there where I decide to eat something not on my plan. I also eat a lot of protein, adequate fat, fruits and veggies, and some starchy carbs (and two desserts) daily. It fuels my workouts just fine, and I have crushed several PRs during this time.
I've had my thyroid checked and it's fine. You might want to do yours too just to be sure, but I'm betting the answer lies in trying to eat a little bit more, more consistently. Check out my diary if you want; it's public.0 -
I'm no expert, but you sound sugar addicted to me, try doing keto for a few weeks and stop your body craving the carb for energy, instead of using its stores0

If you have clinical depression, low carb can be a disaster. It can also be a big help. If you're well-managed, it's not worth the risk unless you already know it helps you. If you don't have clinical depression, and you want to try it, go nuts.0
