HM training and illness

I'm right in the middle of training for my first half (nov 16) and suddenly, my immune system is taking a nosedive. Last week I was getting really bad tension headaches, early this week I battled a crazy head cold, and now I've got some weird stomach bug. Could this be related to my training intensity? I'm following the plan perfectly so I doubt I'm overdoing it. I'm trying my best to run through it, but have had to sacrifice some miles.

What plan? Sounds like you ARE overtraining or undereating. Especially if you've never experienced these problems before.

I just finished a round of Insanity while trainning for a 12 k race. I have been eat a healthy menu and take a multi Vit every morning. I also take a few chewable Vit C morning and night. the only time my immune system seems to take a nose dive is when my refined sugar intake goes up. Make sure your eating a balanced menu and baring any medical problems you should be able to keep trainning, although I would listen to your body on the training and mileage. Hope this helps.
  • I'm doing a 16-week training plan, so I def don't think it's overtraining. I've also recently switched to maintenance cals because I reached my goal weight and to ensure I'm properly fueled to run 25+ miles a week. The only other factor is that the weather's changing so instead of running when it's 85 degrees outside, it's been 60.

If you're eating enough and sticking to your plan, then it just might be that you are sick. Its fall, its back to school time. These things happen. The important thing to do is to rest. If you try to 'push through' and exercise while sick, you will only drag the illness out. Look at it this way: If you have a genuine cold or flu, your body is working to battle that. If you had half mary training on top of it, then your body also has to work at muscle repair and the rest of it. You end up being inefficient at both battling the illness and muscle recovery.

If you have to talk a week off, don't sweat it. Shiz happens. I have never made it through a round of training without something causing me to skip a few runs. You won't lose all your fitness if you spend a few days in bed.
