Protein Shake curiosity...

So, I just got back on the fitness bandwagon and for the first time ever have started working out with a trainer. She recommended that I drink protein shakes to help with my overall protein intake. I'd ask her for her specific plan for me to drink the shakes, but I forgot during the session, and now she's on vacation for the weekend. Don't worry, I plan to ask in our next scheduled session.
I'm curious--
Can any of you point me in the direction of some RELIABLE sources of information to read up on how they work, and what they do for your body, when to drink them and basic information (how it works) related to the shake?
While I researched the brand I am using, and have started to drink them (I usually drink them in the AM as a meal replacement), I'm curious if they speed up your metabolism and when is the best time to take them. (I've noticed that when I drink them in the AM I'm hungrier throughout the day, but this could also be due to the fact that I'm actually consistently eating/drinking breakfast where as before it was hit-or-miss)
Any information would be helpful.
Thanks so much!

Protein shakes are supplements to help you reach your protein goal
That's all they do0 -

That is indeed it... above poster is right. The only addition I would make is to shop around and search for the highest protein concentration for you dollar. Not all products are created equal and they vary drastically in protein content. It doesn't matter what kind you get unless you have some form of dietary restriction, so all you really need to look for is highest protein content per dollar.
Good luck.0 -

^^ Spot on!
Also, keep in mind protein shakes/power are SUPPLEMENTS and not meal replacements. They were never meant to replace a whole meal. It's a supplement to your regular diet. If you wanna eat something in the morning then eat whole food, a balanced meal of carbs, fat and protein. If you don't want to eat in the morning then by all means don't0 -
Thanks to all! :-) Short, sweet and to the point! Excellent!0
