I just got done reading a book on Thyroid disease and the biggest take aways were to 1) log food 2) eat a healthy whole foods diet and 3) be honest with what foods one can eat and what should be left alone.
I have hypothyroidism and I've gained 60 pounds. I went through another summer with my weight dictating what activities I can do. I'm so DONE with it. My goal is to follow a 90/10 program and 1 hr of exercise daily... 90% of the time following a 1200-1400 calorie plan (loads of veggies, some fruit, lean protein and 2 servings of whole gain daily) and 10% eating out or eating foods that I wouldn't normally partake in.
I know that when I eat pasta or bread I eat 3 to 4 servings and I crave more within 30 minutes of eating. These foods are just too hard for me to eat reasonably so it's better for me to just save these for the 10% times so I can reach my goal.
My first goal is to lose 5 pounds by October. I hope to exceed this but with my thyroid I will be happy with 5 pounds and hopefully better eating habits will be easier. I'm looking forward to connecting with others who are starting or who've met their goals.

Wishing you the best in your goal to lose 5 lbs by October. It is a grrreat 1st goal. :happy: I have been on MFP for over 600 days, but recently "started over" because logging wasn't my primary goal in life these past few months, and I gained some weight back as a result.
I have a journal that reminded me of the anniversary of my heart attack 4 years ago August 25. I vowed in 2009 that I would not experience another one. Back in February this year, my blood levels were PERFECT. I was taking care of my health and exercising, then, I think I got too confident, and all went to that proverbial hand basket...(smile).
I have some great pals here on MFP, but, they are active at different times. Many kept me going by sending notes of encouragement to come back...and I will be happy to celebrate my 5th day in a row tomorrow of logging.
You can accomplish your goals with your condition. It takes exercise, a deficit in calories, and a NEVER GIVE UP Spirit, which is exactly what I am doing now. My goal is to lose 10 lbs by December. Toning and losing Body Fat have always been my other goals. I am quite a bit older, but, am planning to live into my 90's as healthy as can be. I've got grandkids 3 years old and 19 months that I want to see grow up.
I am lucky to be as healthy as I am, despite the genetics of heart attacks in my family. Anyway, if you are active and want a pal to share in the trial, tribulations and VICTORIES, friend me! :drinker: I will be a friend, indeed :flowerforyou:

Sorry to not have responded earlier I usually use my I-Phone to log etc so I didn't see this. Thank you for your reply. Congrats on making changes after your heart attack. I look at my siblings and all are obese even my eldest brother who had a heart attack a few years back. People can either take a life event and use it to change or will just put it aside because change is hard. I know it's taken me years to get the courage up to finally make the changes needed.
I would say I'm eating well why can't I lose weight. Well could it be the Friday pizza and ice cream, the bags of candy and chips each week and the 1" thick slabs of artisan bread with cheese...could that be the problem :ohwell:
For the past few weeks I've managed to eat 99% of the time without sugar, gluten and dairy foods and I feel amazing. I would hear others talk about removing gluten and I thought they were crazy or that it wasn't a sustainable lifestyle. Well when I cannot have just 1 small slice of bread or pasta it makes sense to remove from my diet except for a special occasion. I now understand and I am WILLING to make these changes in order to get my life back.
