P90X WEIGHT GAIN IN 1ST WEEK

Hi, so I have been working out consistently for the last 6 months, mostly doing Jilian Micheals DVD's, and have lost 23 pounds. I pretty much lose 0.5 pounds/ week ( I am 5'2 and WAS 133 on Monday I would like to lose about 10 more pounds) . This week I started P90X classic program to change things up... but I GAINED 2 pounds!!! I really wasn't expecting a loss, but did not expect a gain!! I have been using a HRM for my workouts and netting an average of 1200 calories per day ( I am eating around 1600). Is this normal??? I know muscles retain water when you workout blah, blah, but I haven't experienced this in my journey yet and am feeling slightly discouraged. I do manage to drink at least 12 glasses of water per day, I eat alot of protien and try to keep processed foods to a minimum. Anyone have a similar experience or advice??? Thanks!!

  • Water retention for sure due to the stress of a new workout. Don't worry about it, It will resorb in a few days.

    Thanks, I hope so!!
  • I am starting week three of P90x and I also gained, around 3lbs! I was so discouraged, I felt like I was working so hard and I felt better but just couldn't get over the weight gain. I tried adding more water to my diet and now after about two weeks of p90x I lost the weight I gained plus an extra pound. I will admit that I'm not following any particular diet, but I am by no means over eating. I feel much stronger and leaner so i'm trying to focus on that now. Good luck, it sounds like your doing everything right, plus some :) I'm sure you'll loose that weight in the next week or two.

What he said. I have done P90x three times over the last several years and always have weight fluctuations like that. Don't panic. It will all work out in the end. And above all, remember that weight is irrelevant- it is just a number. Focus on how good you feel by being in shape. BF% is a far better target than weight, imo.
