My step son's passed away a few months ago. :( RIP Spike. He is buried under a palm tree outside with a Buddah over his grave. He had a long life of about 10 years.

    Omgoodness, they are cute!!

Are they hard to care for? Are they expensive to purchase?

I've seen them in pet stores but never given them a second glance.

i've been researching...you need at least a 10 gallon tank, heat lamp/UV lamp (make sure temp is right since they are cold blooded), right food (veggies, crickets, mealworms), TLC... they live a long time if cared for properly.

I have one. They aren't that bad to care for, but the initial setup does get costly, plus they get way bigger than a 10 gallon tank. They will chill on your shoulder though. They are very relaxed and friendly reptiles. A good starter lizard.

http://www.beardeddragon.org/ is an excellent resource for the care of bearded dragons. All of your questions can be answered there.

Right now my beardie is 18 months old, a tad over 1 foot long and he is currently in a 44 gallon tank with 2 heating lamps, and 1 UVB lamp. They really do need room to move around. You need a "basking" side of the tank, and a cooler side of the tank. The basking side for adults needs to be kept at 100 degrees F, the cooler side around 80. Juveniles basking needs to be kept at 110, cooler side around 90-100 F.

He gets let out at least once or twice a day to roam around and gets a bath every 2 days or so. As an adult he gets greens every day to eat, and every other day 20-30 crickets or superworms. Babies eat only crickets every day and they eat a LOT. You also have to dust the crickets with calcium powder before feeding. He poops every day, and no they are not like cats or dogs lol. They just poop whenever and wherever. You can't really train them.
