Do you exercise when you have your period? In your experience, does it help or exacerbate the pain? Do you still exercise but cut back, or do you exercise more? Are there any particular exercises you avoid or add? I've heard stretches and such can actually help, but never heard too much about other exercises. Thanks

I do as usual, it actually helps me, it takes the pain away0
-
Yes, and exercise can help with the pain, but it takes some getting used to. Typically I avoid doing abs though. For me everything else is fair game.0
-
Yeah me too, same as usual. It doesn't seem to affect my exercising thankfully. I guess it's trial and error, try it and if there is anything that causes you discomfort then avoid those exercises maybe.0

Exercise is like a partial cure for me, so I definitely keep it up. However only if it's cardio. I can't do strength training because my body needs to be constantly moving to lessen the cramps, otherwise it's just agony.
The faster I go, the better I feel. Running is by far the best, the elliptical is also good. Can't use the bike though. Can't seem to go fast enough to eliminate the pain.
Edit: I hate to be the grossest person on the board (please don't report me!) but o.r.g.a.sms are an immediate cure. Ijs. It works like a miracle. :drinker:0 -

LOL! Nah, that's not gross. Men aren't supposed to be reading this (shoo!) and us women should be hardened by now! :P
Thank you to everyone! I really appreciate your input on this!0 -
Just because we are bleeding out doesn't mean the world stops turning.
Yes I still workout.
Yes I stick to my routine.
Yes I makes me feel better.
Yes I hate squating on my period.
Yes I'm scared I'm gonna push so hard it comes out it out.
You should really use the search function. This has been asking a million times over.0 -

When I saw the topic title my first thought was "Do you workout when it's that time of the month?"
Thank you for not disappointing me! LOL
I work out.
I shower.
I eat.
I sleep.
I shop.
I work.
I watch tv
I swim.
I lay on the beach.
I drink booze.
I don't let my period stop me from doing anything. It's the 21st Century not the dark ages.0 -

This. And this.0 -
Not me. I like to stop everything when I am on my period.0

It depends on why you are having your pain specifically, probably. I have endometriosis and do have to watch how I move then. If I can walk. I do yoga if I can, or walk.
Mine is only like that for two days, so I deal. It made getting tattoos an absolute breeze, so there's that I though that was supposed to actually hurt.
Edit: oh, does it help? Probably. But if I feel good enough to exercise at all, that's hard to say because my cramps might just be better when that happens, you know?0 -

I get really fatigued on the day right before but once I'm 'on' I'm absolutely fine and I'll happily run, swim, cycle, lift etc.0
-
Yes I do. But that's only because my period it's perry awesome lol.. No cramps no blaring no pain no nothing!0
-
I do it0

... (wanted to know if orgasm is censored).
on the other note. It does help, but it feels gross.0 -
Sure, I know of no reason not to workout. If I am cramping real bad, then no work-out.0

Do you work/go to class as normal? Hang out with friends/family as normal? If yes then yes, you should still work out. If it doesn't stop you from doing all the other stuff, why should is stop you from exercising?0

I go even harder during my period. I never felt barely any pain during my period. At most mild cramps. I am not a wuss. I am not afraid of blood (I guess that's what a period is right), intense pain, pushing hard etc.... The intensity and focus and willpower I need to push myself out of the hole during a heavy barbell squat and my competitiveness and mental toughness surpasses ALL let alone my period. LOL. Just LOL at that.
For me working out is getting comfortable with being uncomfortable and my period falls to about to a "1" on a 1-10 scale with 10 being the toughest... Not even a 1 actually.0 -

Ever since eating healthier my pain has gotten much better, however! Prior, on my period (which generally lasted 5-8 days) I would get extremely, extremely pale and get dark circles beneath my eyes. I would throw up, it was impossible to sleep because of sheer unbearable pain, I took prescription pills from my doctor and that would only vaguely mute the pain. I asked my doctor if she knew why a few years back and she said it's possible I have cysts on my uterus (and some fancy words I don't remember). So, I wouldn't go to work, or class, or anything. I would lay on my bed crying all day with ice packs on my back -- or a heating blanket, whichever was easiest to obtain. THANKFULLY, after adopting a vegan diet, all of this has changed. It's shorter, less painful, and I can function as a normal human being! I do have a fear of pushing my luck and bringing that nightmare back. But with everyone's wonderful inputs I'm going to try it out, lightly, and see how it goes! Thank you
edit: Oh, and I would drool excessively which was REALLY weird, like my entire mouth would fill up completely and I would have to go to the sink to spit it up every few minutes, and that was generally on the thirdish day. Lord knows!0 -
Yeah, I figured you might not just be asking about regular cramps.
If you asked me whether I should work out with a person smashing my bones repeatedly with a hammer that would be more like what the question feels like to me. I woke up during surgery once, and that's the sort of thing I'm talking about, lol. Except it lasts for two straight days (even with meds, obviously). I swear I'd cut someone if they tried to take my heating pad away
If yours ever gets unbearable again, you might ask your OB/GYN to check you for endo. There are treatments. I just go off of them every few years until I'm not able to take it again, because what I'm on is a hormonal treatment. Normal periods don't hurt that badly, though, and don't ever let anyone tell you they do -- especially a doctor.0 -
If my answer was no I don't, I would be working out half as much as I do now...and that's not gonna happen.
Always have...always will...
It's not a sickness and if it's that bad get your butt to your doctor.0 -
If I run during the month, I'll get some pre cramping (lasts about 5 mins and can be intense) a week to a few days before my period begins but the cramping during will be next to nothing. It's the main reason I'm just starting to get back into running because I'm tired of being out of commission for two full days.
If I haven't run during the month and I try to do some working out when I'm experiencing cramping during my period, it will worsen it significantly. That's why I only workout when I'm not cramping.0 -
I do my normal workout like its any other day.0

I don't let my period stop me from doing my exercise. I do get more fatigued, so I just take it easier, but that doesn't mean I should stop exercising altogether.0

And I also had that drool issue! But mine was more of a gagging-drool thing. Like when I'd be eating all of a sudden I'd feel like I was vomiting oxygen and then I'd drool everywhere XD
What helped me in the end was apple cider vinegar o_O One shot a day.0 -

I wish I knew this a few months ago!! :P
Update (for those who share similar situations): I haven't really been getting cramps since eating better (prior I would eat absolute junk) - yesterday I had light - but bearable - cramping. I did my exercises both yesterday and today. Today I'm perfectly fine!0
