Didn't think about fibre, so many things to look out for, lol

At least with fiber, your body can't process it, but it tries hard to get rid of it. I would suggest tracking protein, fats, carbs, sodium and fiber.

Since MFP allows you to track up to 6 values, you might want to add cholesterol (in addition to protein, fats, carbs, sodium and fiber), if heart disease runs in your family or you have a history of high blood cholesterol.

Here in Australia the health promotion is for Two fruit & Five Veg a day - probably because of the high sugar content of the fruit. Try carrots, celery, lots of crunch and not much sugar!

Some fruits are lower in sugar than others - kiwi fruit are good, as are berries mentioned by another poster.

Protein is great way to fill up - eggs also useful. Nuts - almonds are good, easy to snack on. Sounds like you are planning well :-)

So if you're trying to lose body fat then stick to the berry family for fruits and no fruit after 2pm. When sugar (added, fruit or any) enters the blood system a response for insulin is called for to remove the sugar. This hinders fat burning and promotes fat storage.

If you're not trying to lose the last 5 or 10 lbs enjoy your fruit to 2-3 serving a day and 8-12 serving of veggies. Lean meats are your best bet for protein...nuts and other proteins are good too just not as complete as lean meats.

All in all what matters most is what works for you. Take what's above in stride to finding what is the best combo for you.

I.E for me...really low carbs really leans me out. I however find it hard to eat low carbs as I love oatmeal, whole grain breads and such.

Find what works best for YOU!!!

    Very well said :drinker:

I highly disagree. Eating berries vs banana's or apples will not improve fat loss, especially the timing of them. What if you wake up at noon. Are you telling me you should stop eating fruit within 2 hours of waking up. I am glad it's worked for him, but it's unnecessary in terms of fat loss. The below story alone will debunk this theory.

  • Thak you for all your suggestions, looks like I've created a debate, I would never stop eating the amount of fruit I eat, its the main source of my feel good factor without the guiltiness of chocolate or take aways.

My question was answered when someone advised about good / bad sugar. I suppose it matters on the individual, I am highly active after work, so the fruit gives me the energy I need, look at sports personalities eating banana's / satsuma's before they run, or at half time in a football match - its a great source of energy.

Easiest way would be to turn off the tracker on the sugar and enjoy your fresh fruit....

I never track my sugar nor my cabs, and i love it. If i want to have my fruit i'll have it and i don't restrict myself. If i want to eat 5 bananas for a meal i just do it lol But in my case, i keep the fat low (15% max), and it works for me.

it's fruit. it's fine. fruits are high in sugar but they are naturally occuring sugars which is way better for you than eating the same amount of sugars in junk food. no worries. i have the sugar off in my diary because of my fruit consumption it is always "over." if you eat the recommended amount of fruit you will be over in sugars. idk why mfp has fiber and sugar set so low

Any ideas for foods rich with protein?

Nuts and nut butters. Greek yogurt. Cheese and eggs.

yes, it's high but I don't care. I love eating various fruit and am still losing weight. The vitamins and minerals in fruit are worth it to me. Plus, I don't eat sweets so fruit is my desert.

Nonsense. Your body can't tell fructose and glucose in an apple from fructose and glucose in a can of soda. They are chemically identical.

All things in moderation where fruit is concerned.
The sugar in fruit is fructose. The body processes it differently than glucose. High fructose corn syrup is the worst form. People who consume too much develop fatty liver disease and will have a hard time convincing their doctor that they are not a drunk.
If you are tracking total sugar, fruit is just one more natural source. It is far better than processed sugar.

HFCS is the "worst form" of WHAT? HFCS is 42~55% fructose/45~58% glucose.

According to Harvard Health, fructose is the problem, and it doesn't matter if the fructose comes from fruit or soda.

"...the real villain may be fructose—a form of sugar found in fruits, vegetables, and honey. It may not matter whether it’s in high-fructose corn syrup, refined sugar, or any other sweetener."

The amount of fiber and digestion time matters with fructose, so fruits really are different than a soda as far as how the energy is metabolized (how it triggers insulin, etc.).

One simplified scale they've made is called the glycemic index. Check out the glycemic index of a fruit if you are concerned about its sugar that way.

I do count my fruit calories because I eat a ton of them, lol. But I don't worry about their carbs as if they were candy bars. They are a very healthy choice.

Just look at the vegetarian food triangle. Fruit is almost at the top meaning that you have to limit the amount of fruit to eat.

You can eat any think in moderation till the same is under your set goal, its apply on fruits too (especially for carb, fiber). Fruits are fantastic to eat containing different types of elements which are very good for us, different fruits contain different vitamins & minerals which are beyond MFP's listed macros. But fruits do contain FRUCTOSE in good quantities and you will find different opinions on fructose, whether its good for our health or enemy. One thing else, fiber is very good for us but if we are eating heavy fibers on regular basis it will hard to digest smoothly.
So......in my opinion eat the nature's gift - fresh fruits if your health permit but in moderation & try to minimize eating the fruit/s high on GI index.
