I'm sure that many of us using this program absolutely LOVE sweets!!! I know I do!!! I'm sure that I am quite literally a sugar-addict and a choco-holic!!! In the past, I've found myself hiding my favorite goodies ("my stash") in different places so I wouldn't have to share them with my family. How sick and wrong is that??? I was also very embarrassed to allow others to see how many sweets I really was eating. I knew it was wrong, and I knew it was unhealthy, but I wanted to do it anyway. I wasn't able to stop! I think that pretty well defined as addiction. It was quite sad, disgusting, and so very unhealthy, too!!! I feel so bad for my body, mind, and soul for all the years I've abused myself with what I ate!!! It showed absolutely no self-love or self-respect! And, it showed no love or respect for anyone that I loved or anyone that loved me, either!!!

I know I'm still not perfect, and I still absolutely LOVE sweets, but I mostly just avoid them all together now. That's easier for me than to just "cut back" or "keep it under control." I'm still not able to do that, and I may never be. I think of it as kind of like an alcoholic that isn't supposed to ever drink alcohol again--not even one drop--or they may lose all control again. That's how I feel. If I have a little bit, I just want more and more and more... There is no end! I never feel satisfied. I just feel kind of crazy and out of control. I keep thinking that the next bite will be the last, and I won't want anymore. But, that feeling never comes... So, it's easier and most effective for me to not have any sweets at all!!! I just try to have something special with me (like a sugar-free goody, sugar-free gum, etc.) in case I have an uncontrollable craving or when others are having sweets around me. When I'm very careful like this, I get to where I really don't crave or miss sweets at all. I have a sweet, healthy piece of fruit, a large glass of water, and I go for a nice walk when I feel really weak about it. I also talk with others that have similar issues for support. I TRULY AM A RECOVERING SUGAR-ADDICT, and I must be very cautious at all times!!!

It's extremely sad to me now, and it was very harmful to my body then! I very sincerely hope and pray that it didn't do any long-term damage to my health!!! We only get one life and one body, so we MUST do all that we can to stay our very best each day!!! Like they say, "This is not a dress rehearsal"! This is real, this is NOW, and this is the only life I'll get!!! I finally realize that very important fact of life, and I'm 50 years old!!! I guess I'm quite slow, but unfortunately many of us are, including most young people (just like I was). And, young people have it even harder now with even more addictive, processed, and prepackaged crap along with limitless technical devices that keep us on our butts!!!

There is an "over-weight epidemic" going on in America, and I think that most of us are just trying to ignore it (and maybe it will go away). But, it won't just go away without conscious effort and awareness that will hopefully catch on, spread, and replace the over-weight "plague" that is going on today!!! It's so very sad to me, and I sure hope we can all work together to be good to ourselves and to help others to do the same!!! This website is like "a good-health movement" that we can help spread!!! Hopefully, it will even reach all of the overweight young people, as well. We can all be great role-models of how to love and care for our selves (heart, mind, soul, and body)... Thanks for reading this, and now I must GET OFF MY BUTT and get moving!!! :)

Yes, What you said is sooo true. I am not a "chips" or salt Junkie eater, I love cookies, brownies and all kinds of yummy sugary sweet things. HA HA And I can identify with all that you have said here, Thanks for posting this. Sugar is so bad for us.

One thing I tried that really helped me get rid of my sugar cravings is I went to my local health food store and I bought what my friend who is a health expert (i call her that) recommended to me. It is called "perfect food" by garden of life.

I blend it up with my apples and carrots and whatever else I want in the blender, and It has really made a difference in my life.
I like how I feel after eating all those veggies, (the perfect food is made from veggies we probably wouldnt eat anyway right now) haha. and I have sooo much more energy when I want to go work out or even clean my house or take a walk. Its like my body is saying thank you for giving it the fuel it really needs instead of the junky sugar I have been feeding it.

Sometimes I wish I couldnt taste anything. :( Then getting thin (Im already healthy--Via blood tests etc) wouldnt be an issue. HA HA.

I had a friend that said he never looks at food as anything but Fuel. If you wouldnt put garbage in your gas tank, dont put it in your mouth. He is a Marine....and doesnt even like icecream. YIKES....

I know what you mean about hiding a "stash" of junk food!!! :frown: I have stopped doing this about six months ago, and sat my family down, and told them we only get ONE body, and ONE chance to live AND be healthy. I want to be able to run after my daughter when she is riding her bike, rather than just watching her as I SLUDGE along behind her! I am thrilled to have such a website that will help us, and perhaps everyone we know, and everyone they know...etc...

We have a major epidemic of being "obese" , and I refuse to sit by and not do my part  So, here's to a new generation of HEALTH-CONSCIOUS people :drinker: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: We can do this...

That's beautiful, if you can sustain it. I love sweets BIG time. But with MFP, I have learned even "healthy foods" like fruits and veggies contain sugar. I have lost over 70 pounds -- slowly over about 8 years. I eat everything I enjoy -- including some candy, ice cream and pastries, etc. It's hard to resist them totally and forever. But we are all different. Do what works best for you.
  • I used to be that way too! Once I started I could not stop. The best way would be to keep no sweets in the house! That way if you want a piece of chocolate, you can go out and buy ONE really good, small piece. I don't think cutting it out completely would ever work for me, but by not keeping it in the house, the temptation is not there

Another tip is to brush your teeth after each meal, or when you feel a craving coming on. The minty fresh taste sort of puts the sweet tooth to sleep:tongue:

I relate to everything you are saying. I'm not so much a sugar addict as a chocoholic, especially the dark stuff. I have tried over and over to stop... and sometimes its works for a while. But eventually it calls me back. So I'm trying a different approach. For 2 weeks I completely stopped the chocolate. Then I re entered it in a more rational way. I've have a chocolate day once a week for the last 8 weeks. I have either chocolate cheerios or chocolate shredded wheat for breakfast, a hersheys with almonds sometime during the day. And my daughter bought me chocolate vodka for my birthday, so I have 1 chocolate drink. It may sound silly, but for me it works. I am not completely giving it up, only to fall off the wagon. I look forword to chocolate day, but it also allows me to stay the course. So far I've lost 20 pounds. I think I can do it this time

Excellent post! This is something many of us can identify with 100%. I've been there too. Thankfully, I've gained control and I've discovered personal secrets that help me keep it under control. For instance, I love peppermint patties and I don't over eat them. Two small ones are 100 calories so I allow myself this a day or two each week. Somehow it doesn't trigger my eating. M&Ms trigger me though and I want the ENTIRE bag. So I simply don't buy them. Its all about finding what works for you individually. And you, my friend, have done that! WAY TO GO!

    Thanks for posting this. :)
  • THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!!! You are all like my little angels that keep me on course... And, I certainly need all the help I can get. I love all your ideas, and I agree with them, too. I probably won't be able to never have sweets again, so I will try out all your ideas and see what works best for me. I think they might all work at different times. Thanks again, Laura :):flowerforyou:

I'm also a sugar junkie. Or I should say I was, I gave up refined sugar 8 years ago and it was the best choice I have ever made for myself. I don't preach to others, we all have to make are own choices, but I'm glad I gave it up and I hope to never eat it again. It's funny because the first 6 months didn't seem to bad, but then at about year 3 I felt like I was craving sugar all the time, weird I know. Now I crave about once a month, wink wink, and I can push that off with a good smoothie. But I assume I will crave it forever, but that's fine, I know how I feel now and nothing has ever tasted as good as I feel without refined sugar in my life.

I wish you all the best in your personal battle with sugar.
