living healthy in Mexico ... HELP!

Hello fellow fitness pals!

I committed myself to healthy clean eating, balanced nutrition, and fitness at the beginning of 2013 and lost nearly twenty pounds by August! Then, I moved to Puebla, Mexico (about a month and a half ago) under an English teaching grant. Mexican food, especially the amazing street food, is INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS and FULL of grease, fat, and sugar! For the first few weeks, I focused more on adapting to this new lifestyle and dealing with culture shock. Now that I'm adjusted, however, I am worried about returning to and maintaining the healthy diet I had in the United States. Here, it's nearly impossible to find such staples of my American diet as quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat anything, kale, sweet potatoes, etc. I try to buy the fresh local fruits and vegetables at the markets, but I am really struggling to keep my diet clean, nutritious, and healthy! Due to the water quality, salads hardly exist here.. Everything is fried and covered in cheese! I drool over the quesadillas women fry fresh on the street; the smell of the bakeries all but makes me swoon! But I cannot continue to allow myself to incorporate these things into my regular diet! I am so worried about gaining weight and clogging my arteries!!

Has anyone experienced a similar lifestyle change after moving and adapting to a different culture? Any tips?? Especially Mexico (or Puebla) specific tips!

Thanks everyone! Sending love and support from beautiful, delicious Mexico!

Sam
