Any way to curve nausea after my morning work out?

Hi there,

So I've decided to start working out in the early morning hours since that's the only time my schedule allows for it. I wake up at 5 and am working out by 5:30am. I've always been a person that works out in the evenings, after dinner and I'm well hydrated so I normally don't have this feeling like I need to throw up afterwards. I've noticed in my morning workouts I don't have as much energy (maybe it's the lack of food? Or just my body adjusting to the new time?) and when I finish I feel really nauseated. Is there anything I can do to help my body not feel this way? Maybe drinking more water at night? Or maybe it will just pass eventually when my body gets used to waking up early?... has anyone else experienced this and gotten over it? Also, after showering and eating some eggs, avocado etc the feeling went away. I just would like to avoid it if possible! Thanks...
FYI I've been doing the 30 Day Shred.. just in case that makes a difference

Try to eat something small prior to workout. That is what helps me. Even if its a quick protein shake before hand. I know I cant workout in the AM as I get sick working out on an empty stomach.

I used to REALLY get ill after mine. My trainer changed things up for me. I take my B12 (10,000 units under the tongue) as soon as I get up, and then after it is dissolved I keep pieces of cheese (1/2 ounce slices) and eat one of those after the B12 is gone. I have not had issues since then. I do not drink anything before I start as I will have to "GO" during it, so I save all that for afterwards.

    Eat food. =D
  • What time and how much are you eating before bed?
The reason why people use to say milk and cookies before bed was for the glucose to keep you full throughout the night and into the point you wake up. I had this problem when not eating enough before bed I was waking up starving. It also caused me to feel sick during workouts.

Try eating a small snack closer to bed or wake up and eat something 30min to workout. I used to eat a banana every morning on my way to the gym. Now I am deployed and dont have that so I wake up and eat a larabar.

Drink lots of water and eat something. The sugar is what your body needs to sustain.
  • are you drinking any caffeine upon waking up? That could make you very nauseous on an empty stomach... grab a couple hard boiled egg whites or something to put some protein in your belly.

Small amount of food and also drink some water before starting-room temp and keep water with your during workout. I used to get nausea with my morning workout and then it subsided so I hope yours does to!

Up at 3:45am. Threw on clothes, grabbed keys, water, made toast with PB -sometimes it's a banana- at gym by 4:15. Lift heavy for an hour.

The only nausea I feel just tells me I'm working hard.

I recommend you eat a little something before you work out.
  • I have to eat something with sugar in the am before I workout and try to eat something with some protein after I workout. I usually eat Cliff Z Bar then a protein shake. I also get really sick if I don't eat for a morning workout. Good luck!

I am a early in the morning workout person. Up by 4 and a the gym by 5. I will often have carbs right before bed - a serving of oatmeal is my favorite, then my tummy isn't empty when I wake as I don't acutally have breakfast until I get to work. Also, for me I need to have coffee, so by waking up at 4:00 I have time to have a coffee. I found the times I have had the naseau feeling are the times that I have slept in and jump right into working out. I like to get up, move around a bit (make coffee, lunches, empty the dishwasher) just to ge the blood pumping. Then by the time I hit the gym I am fully funtional.

Sometimes I find I need a bit of sugar, so I will have some grapes just to get the sugar in me. Those are typically the days I don't have carbs before bed.

    Hope this helps.

This might be helpful for this week. I'm working out about 30 mins right after waking up so this might help since 30 mins is probably to soon to work out before eating.

What has always worked for me is to eat something small, 30-45 minutes before a workout. Usually something like a spoonful of natural peanut butter and half a banana. In my experience the nausea usually gets better and stops all together once your body gets more used to the workout and your fitness improves.

I tried everything to do my workouts in the morning. Nothing I did alleviated the nausea. Eating, not-eating, drinking, not drinking, etc. I finally gave up and went back to evening work-outs. Good luck.
