I am looking at my hiking recipes and found an oldie but goodie, grog cakes or oatmeal pancakes. The recipe calls for 1/2 cup powdered milk.

This may be a stupid question, but, can I substitue protein powder for some of the milk and up the protein content of a trail breakfast that way?

Does anyone have good suggestions for trail food that is not overloaded with carbs and sodium?

  • no clue here but you could try it at home and maybe cut the recipe in half for a trial run.

how about beef jerky on the trail, or vienna sausages, maybe tuna and low sodium crackers. I hope this helps

Here are a couple of my favorites:

    Southwest Chicken Wraps
    1 can chicken (5 oz.)
    1 mayo condiment packet
    1 salsa condiment packet
    2 flour tortillas
Mix tuna, mayo and salsa together. Spread on tortillas and roll.

    Tuna Wraps
    1 packet tuna (3 oz.)
    1 mayo condiment packet
    1 relish condiment packet
    2 flour tortillas
Open tuna packet. Mix in mayo and relish. Spread on tortillas.

As far as the protein powder goes, I know you can use it to replace the flour.
Never heard of using it to replace the powdered milk tho.

Give it a trial run tho, certainly wouldn't hurt to try!

I guess I was thinking about it as a milk substitute because of the whey protein in it. I hadn't thought of it as a wheat substitute.

    Thanks!
