Protein for a 250lb male ?

I have a friend (male, 250lb, 6'1) who eats 2,418 cal/day and exercises once or twice a day (gym/biking etc). He's lost 18lb in 3 months.

How many grams of protein do you guys think he should consume? MFP has it set at 150 grams/day.

150 probably bare minimum. 175-200 really good (that's what I eat and I also consume about 2400 a day).

That's what I was thinking too, but he has a hard head.

In what way? Is he taking in more than 200g? Not really a problem unless it's extreme. If he's taking in less than 150g, at that size and with that level of activity then he's definitely short-changing himself.

Generally for males you want to your protein intake at 1g/per lb of LBM

Yeah usually he had been eating 80-120g/day. Since I yelled at him he has upped it to to 150-175g which is better.
  • im 240... and i take 3 scoops of GNC wheybolic extreme protein post workout w/ 1 tsp createne & 1 tbs beta alanine.. Then i eat fish or chicken for dinner..

Dont know how you guys do it but im usually around 100 - 150g per day... and in the past i have seen very good results from this.

Protien mix is spendy... i've used ALOT of different ones... seems the gnc stuff works the best for me personally... but it's freaken expensive!
  • Depends on his goals and what he's trying to accomplish. Most typical people get all the protein they need from their regular diet but if he's trying to accomplish a goal of some sort he may need more. Hard to answer that question without more information.

I've heard that >120g is just pointless in most situations, even for people lifting heavy???? This was on a bodybuilding.com forum a while ago

doesn't matter if he's trying to lose weight. with weight loss the only question you need to ask is "how much do I need to eat and/or exercise to lose weight?"

Usually all it takes is 1200-to-2000 to lose weight.

If he's trying to build some muscle as he loses weight or just build more muscle then 25-to-50% of his diet should be protein but overall...

NO ONE (docotor, ME, MFP user or so called expert) can tell you exactly how much of this or that to eat BUT YOU can figure that out on your own thru trial & error using a food journal (or MFP)
