Random Commentary from Outsiders

I used a nutrition calculator to order from a sandwich shop for lunch, which was so, so useful! However, my skinny co-worker noticed this and told me, "You have an eating disorder!" I told her, "Yes, I do have an eating disorder, because if I don't count my calories/mind my portions, I eat TOO much."

She then commenced to telling me that she ate an ENTIRE regular sized package of double-stuffed Oreos on Sunday, all by herself. I HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THAT!!! Lol!

I then told her that she sounds like she has an eating disorder. heeheehee!

Anyway, WHY do people feel the need to comment and attack you for trying to do better? I know I shouldn't care what others think, and I generally don't, but I'd be a liar if I said it didn't bother me at the time the comment was made. It takes me a minute to re-group, y'know?

People like to exert their opinions and thoughts. It's human nature. She probably isn't still thinking about the exchange and neither should you.

Do what you gotta do and ignore any negativity you feel comes from it.

Because she's worried about your well-being. Counting calories is an behavior exhibited by people with eating disorders. Some people just don't realize it can also be part of a healthy psyche.
  • I know what you mean. Just screw them, you can't please everyone. Keep doing what your doing and don't let people like those stop you from doing your thing.

EDIT - Yeah, I agree with what some people are saying on here. As long as you've got a healthy relationship with food your fine. If you don't, then people are just looking out for you.

^^ pretty much what I was going to say. Also, it can develop into one so just be mindful of that. If you have a healthy relationship with food, it's usually not an issue, but a lot of people end up with some severely disordered thinking around here...

I gotta say, my attitude towards what other people think has been the BEST (for me, not so much for them) improvement I've seen with my weight loss.

My response to something like that right now would be:

"I just lost 200 pounds without surgical assistance, just diet and exercise. What's your excuse?"

Someone who talks about eating an entire package of Oreos to make someone else feel bad has her own demons to work out. Be the willow tree. Or something. People are weird and random commentary isn't worth thinking about.

Understood. I took a couple of weeks off to give myself a break. I did well, but figured I should come back since I have some more weight to lose. I have an obsessive personality, regardless of the topic. I tend to wrestle the crap out of something, until I get tired of it, then I move on to something else to wrestle with. After years of therapy and multiple diagnoses (ADD/GAD/PMDD), I've had to come to terms with the fact that I'm just intense and focused by nature (or natural disorder). But, I get what you're saying, which is why I took a break :)

You're counting calories to improve your waistline and health, I assume, as compared to someone who binged on sugar and chocolate yet pointed the "eating disorder" finger at you? It's called projection. At the very least, it's rude. Either find a new lunch buddy or develop a greater tolerance for the ignorant. I don't believe counting calories for the purpose of losing weight is indicative of an eating disorder if you're overweight - you're doing what you need to do to correct the issue in a smart, healthy way. If you're anorexic and attempting to starve yourself, that's a very different conversation. Keep on counting. It works!

Yeah, I'm fully aware she was projecting, because when I jacked with her about HER eating disorder, she ashamedly looked down and said, "I know." haha!

As for improving my health, you're right. She eats Chick-Fil-A daily, and "confesses" to me via text. Maybe, I make her feel guilty about her crappy diet? haha!

Find out what this lady is doing. If she can eat Oreos by the truckload and still be skinny enough to make fun of her weight then perhaps she's doing something right. Of course if it's meth then that wouldn't be a good idea.

Maybe she does have an eating disorder and she lacks for an appropriate adult way to breach conversation about it.

You have SOS? I do too! I don't think it's that rare. In fact, I think that at least 95% of the female population has it. My husband says that he needs to put blinders on me when we go to the store so I can't look at all the shiny, sparkly things. :)

OP-people are always going to have negative things to say. She probably has guilt issues since she ate an entire bag of oreos in one setting. Just keep doing your thing and don't sweat it.

Thanks, folks. I knew I wasn't the outlier on this one. It's good to hear y'all agree that, in this case, she's the oddball at the moment. Not me. :) See? Skinny ppl have issues, too. I guess, skinny doesn't buy you sanity, either. *smh*

I got that at home all the time! Earlier my parents, brother, cousins, then In Laws..I am also very sensitive about things and it used to get to me. I would give up, eat all the foodz(because they would say, look at us..we eat everything and dont put on weight..so you should do that too!!) and i would gain all the weight back.
Now i know better and just choose to ignore them! Working well until now :drinker:
But yeah, i take lot of breaks in between just so that this doesnt seem to hard. :flowerforyou:

I know. This "one diet fits all" philosophy is not a good fit for everyone. If I ate an entire package of Oreos, not only would I be sick to my stomach and probably vomiting, but I'd gain 2-5 lbs. in the next week and it would stay there until the next month, when I'd be back to square one (pre-Oreo orgy) again.

I just get really terrible advice about quick-fix diets, "eating clean," "zero-carb," etc. I ignore them. They usually mean well. I go to a dietitian to help sort out how I should be eating.

If she's really eating a daily diet of fast food and whole boxes of Oreos, she wont stay skinny or a size 4 for long....watch. I used to be a size 6 at that height, eating all sorts of junk, and then my 30;s hit me like a Mack truck....now I'm a size 16, and I don't judge chubby people anymore. I'm not wishing that transformation on her, but it will probably happen,....
