I am overweight. I know it. My knees and leggs hurt from arthritis. Being lighter would be helpful. I am 5' 5" tall.......would like to weigh 175. Want to lose 35 lbs.
How do I get there? Used to think I knew all the answers to weight loss........but think I have forgotten them all. Just stuck weighing too much because of lack of determination.
Anyone else in this boat...................I need the Sail to get this boat moving?
HELP.

Baby steps.. Always baby steps... Start off by changing how much you eat. Drink more water.. Take a walk after your meal (if you can).. Don't eat after 7pm... Those are all little things you can do off the start. And Do not drink your calories!

I hope you have much success!

Well, I was where you are right now last March. I had taken a series of 7 or 8 blood pressure medicines, and each one made me feel worse.

It was then that I was confronted with a very simple, but not necessarily easy, choice. I could either stop what I'd been doing previously and make a radical change, or keep on enjoying my aches, pains, pre hypertension, pre diabetes, and lousy self image.

I began searching online for anything and everything that I could use to lower my blood pressure, and to maintain hopefully lowered BP with weight loss.

I chose elements of Paleo, WW, the RiceDiet, and Intermittent Fasting, and began praying for help after learning that Bl. John XXIII was also troubled by weight loss problems

Based on my research, I developed an eating plan that included green leafy veggies, egg whites and whole egg, nuts, and berries. I put in my first day on my new plan, then sat back and waited to be beset by cravings, wild hunger pangs, and misery. Only that never happened.

October finds me 40+ pounds lighter, with an average BP of less than 115/65, much happier, much more enthusiastic about what I need to do to feel better,

I have broadened my food choices slightly, although my daily meals are still repetitious and monotonous, as I like them to be. I eat no added salt or sugar, no grain, and only two or three tablespoons of 1/2&1/2 each day from the dairy group.

My suggestion to you is to decide what is the most important thing in your life. If it is feeling well and reducing pain you can research how to do that, make your choices, and facilitate them. You can learn for yourself that eating poorly can make you feel worse, and you can choose to eat well.

It's not easy when you begin but it is simple, and it will get easier every single day you choose to do it.

Also wish to add that you are a very attractive woman.

Hi pattiecakes! You can do this like Ayane101 said by making small changes. It's said that losing 1 pound takes 4 pounds of pressure off one's knees.
When Messier and his fellow researchers measured the load placed on the knees after weight loss, they discovered that every pound lost netted a 4-pound reduction in pressure exerted on the knees. With every step taken, the amount of pressure not exerted on the knees begins to add up.

"For people losing 10 pounds, each knee would be subjected to 48,000 pounds less in comprehensive load per mile walked," Messier wrote in the study article.

So think of ways you can get in a little more exercise & modify your eating habits. And take it one pound at a time and 35lbs won't seem so overwhelming. Tracking your meals & exercise in MFP helps to identify what you can do better. Maybe that's eat more veggies & have a smaller piece of cake. Maybe it means getting some resistance bands & doing some strength exercises.

I joined MFP to track what I ate because I knew I needed to take off a lot of weight to get healthier. I know way too many diabetics - friends and family - and I didn't want to have all the problems that go along with that terrible disease. So my determination every day is spurred on by thinking about taking control of my health & doing what it takes to reach my goals. I'm taking it slowly so I don't get overwhelmed with what lies ahead. Just one day at a time is how I get by.

Believe in yourself & what you have the power to do! :)

Thank you to all who wrote to me. I guess just starting here (as I did in the past...and gave up) is a start.
I can tell you that having a Chick-Fil-A Chicken Salad on a Crossant is not good. Over 500 calories for lunch just in that sandwich. UGH. I will do better tomorrow.
I do not like to eat "in" at work. We have a beautiful "star bucks" type lunch room........but I have an hour and I like to get out of the buildng. I am the Administrative Support for everyone so........I like to step away from the phones and be alone at lunc time.
So lunch is not always good for me. Lunches are costly to eat healthy........but I try.

We visited friends in MD. for vacation last week. They were having a Romane Salad. The man said "Iceberg Lettuce" has no healthy value at all. I have heard that before. So I have Romane lettuce in my drawer now.
    Little improvements............will help.

Thanks for having faith in me.

I need to read these posts to keep going.
Also thanks for the compliment......I always think I am too fat.

You can do this, you just gotta get mad enough to not be satisfied where you are now. Eating more bunny foods (aka salads & veggies) will definitely help you with seeing results a lot sooner. Thank God for new beginnings & new days!!! Are you drinking more than 1/2 your body weight in oz for water? What about taking lunch walks? I get to my son's school an hour early just to take a mile walk or two before he gets out, in addition to the workout I already did in the morning. Just finding ways to get in 10k steps a day will help so much, it's about 5 miles a day. I remember going to the upstairs restroom vs the downstairs, just to get in my steps. It's the little things that all add up. It's okay to have a cheat meal, but not a cheat day, per Bob Harper.

You are welcomed to add me to get motivated & encouraged to make the scale behave! :)

Can you pack a healthy lunch, but eat it someplace else. I don't know where you are, but in nice weather, you could try walking to a park and eat your lunch there. Sometimes I just go out to my car and read a book (I eat at my desk and then "do something" for my official lunch hour - I fully understand that may not be an option for you if you have a "customer facing" work spot)

Wow....today I decided since it was pouring (I live in PA), I would go to Chili's for lunch. I started out with a small house salad. Two tablespoons of ranch dressing. THEN I MADE MY BIG MISTAKE. I ordered a Bacon Ranch Chicken Quesedea...thinking since it does not have much in it, it would be fine. I ate NONE of the french fries that came with the lunch.
Tonight I was looking for cal. value and went on the Chili's website and that Quesedea was 1740 calories.
I went on MFP and put in the right wording and they have it as 1420 calories. STILL TERRIBE.

Needless to say that blew the whole days total. I will NOT be eating that again. Sodium was 3320 or something like that.
I know you are shaking your head as I am.

Well, tomorrow is a better day. I am thinking about getting a FITBIT....to count my steps. I sit alot at work as I am an Administrative Sec.....but some days it seems all I do it walk.
The CEO has a Fitbit on today and I was discussing it with him. He has a pink on for breast cancer awareness. I told him $99 is alot since most of the step counters I have bought are junk.........but he showed me how his syncs up with the pc and his cell....so he can keep accurate count of food, steps, exercise......
Late morning I walked by him and he told me he has an extra at home and I can have it. So we will see if he brings it in........I hope so. I want to try it.

Anyone else have a Fitbit? They are coming out with a newer / more high tech than the FITBIT. He is getting that too.

Have a great day. I am trying. Romaine Heart Salad and Pot Roast for dinner. YUMMM

Keep up the good work! We all have those whoops days! If we didn't, we would all be a size 2! lol. I'm pretty new here myself. One thing that I've heard, and is really smart, is to scope out the menu online before you go. That way there's no surprises when you go to log it in. My sodium is always way high. That's my mission this week....lower the sodium. Good luck and feel free to add me :)

It's not a lack of determination, is making choices that don't support you goal to lose weight.

I have a desk job as well. Maybe you can eat lunch brought from home and then go outside. But at least you are thinking about losing weight. That's the first step. If you find yourself slipping a lot, make even smaller changes. Also, you don't have to have all the willpower and determination now, you will get it. You just need enough determination to follow through on the first step, whether it be eating out less, no baked goods, drink more water, etc. I think as you see you following through, you will get even more

I have arthritis and bad knees to. I definitely know how you feel. What motivates me is that the weight can be partly to blame for the arthritis. So, in my mind I think that loosing could help me feel some type of relief. Lately, my knees have been especially hurting so I use some pain cream and try not to stand or sit for too long.

At our local YMCA we have water aerobics which has been a blessing for me. Working out in the water has been so helpful because I finally have something I can do.

Also, you must change what and how you eat. It doesn't happen over night but it will help. What I suggest is not totally changing everything but little things like adding less salt, picking lean meats, and smaller portions. You must plan ahead for when you get hungry or you will gorge on the first thing you can get your hands on.

I am no expert and here for help just like you. If you want to add me so we can help each other that is totally fine! Good luck on your weight loss journey.
