not able to reduce weight!! inspite of trying

hi all,

I need some help and motivation and strategies.

i am srinath, 24 years old, height 187 cm nd weight 104 at present

i am going for gym for the past 1.5 years but i am not able to reduce weight.. i was weighing 120 in april 2012 and at present i am 103. what i was doing in the gym was mainly cardio and did not do weights.. what happened is that even though weight got reduced from 120 to 104 , i dint get shape and still looks to be bulky with butts and belly fat.. i am really frustrated and i have already lost hope on life. while the persons of my age are enjoying their life, i am not able to even laugh happily. because of this inferiority complex, i am avoiding social gatherings, not meeting friends hence loosing friendship. i even lost some frnds ,bcas they felt i am overweight and i dont have the right to mingle with them. it has come to an stage where i am desperate. give me some suggestions and routines to be followed . i wanted to turn my life and be like others and want to prove point to all those who neglected me...now i found this application and started to track my intakes. i am at present eating oly vegetarian.

Ps- the photo was taken july 2012 when i was weighing 120.

    HI

I can not see your food diary so I can not provide feedback.

Congratulations on your weight decrease so far. 17 pounds since April 2012. You should be proud of yourself.

I understand you are a vegetarian. Nevertheless, you need to ensure you are eating at a deficit. Even vegetarians can overeat.

Here is a link that may be of help

Please remember you did not got all the extra weight in 1 month or 1 year. This is a long journey.

    Good luck

Good of you to post here and the first step is support. Your commitment will take you so far but knowing there are people who support your goal and will provide good advice as well as encouragement helps. I can not speak to your gym time but I would wonder can you provide your routine, what you do at the gym? Being a vegetarian helps but I know many who are overweight, I would be more concerned by diet (what types of foods) and how they provide balance to the body as it goes about its daily routine. Finally...its all about movement and life. So if you wish a friend who will encouage you as well as try to provide good advice please feel free to add me.

Do strength training to change the shape of your body. Lift heavy.

You need to start by working out how much you should be eating. Many people use a TDEE calculator to get an estimate of their daily calorie needs for their weight and height and minus 10-20% depending on how much you want to lose.

Fill up on good healthy foods and exercise. Resistance and strength training will help you keep the muscle you have and burn fat. Keep up the cardio too.

Don't give up. We all feel like this is too hard sometimes but you can do it!

@all: thanks for the motivation ..
@greywalk: earlier for the past 1 year, as i said, i was doing only cardio. but from last week onwards i have changed my routine as follows:
    6 days a week workout:

day 1 ,3 : fully cardio . ( i do thread mill walk for 30 mins at around 6 mph. elilptical trainer( efx) for 40 mins 3) stationery biking and cycling (20 mins). and i am buring 800-1000 calories on cardio days.

Day 2 : upper body exercises ( gym instructor said that dont go heavy workouts for 1 month and do basics like shoulder press rowing etc to strenghten your muscles and build a system... d/b bicep curl m/c bicep curl ( no cardio on day 2 & 4)

Day 4 : lower body ( leg curl, leg extension, leg press, kettle raise, lat pull down).

Your friends who would not talk to you because of your weight are not the type of people you want to surround yourself with.

I know this is not the advice you at seeking but this is honestly what someone should tell you. You seem to have a very large anxiety disorder revolving around your weight. All the things you think you cannot do because of your weight you actually CAN do. Train your mind first and your body will follow. Depression, anxiety, stress all can cause chemical reactions in your body that can stifle your attempts and make you workouts much less efficient. Seriously man, get your mind on the right path and you will start to notice more and more changes happening.

As far as what your trainer says as to go light and get the motions. I completely agree. It is really important to get the basic understanding of the movements and introduce your muscles slowely at first so you have a good base and avoid injury when you start to load up heavier weight. With some of these heavy lifts you an really damage yourself long term if you have incorrect form and your body hasn't been properly prepped for it.

Go back to what I originally said though, get your mind right. Your body will never flourish without it. That may mean taking more chances socially. It may mean daily pep talks to yourself. It may mean seeking a professional to help you. It may mean questioning some long standing beliefs about yourself but you are going to have to do what needs to be done in order to be successful.

    Good luck to you.

You look really good for that weight! You should come to the US and nobody would find it particularly unusual ;) We'd love to have you.

You can do this. Weight lifting will change your life if you enjoy the process (and many, many people do!). If you've never tracked calories before, you are in luck. It's a wonderful way to show you what you are doing and how to make different choices.

Don't let your jerk friends get you down. It's nice and freeing to treat your body right, but do it for you. Your size is none of their concern, and they are just being terribly rude and shallow!

Be patient and have faith that you can do this. You can! It can be a long journey, but it's something you'll enjoy if you keep at it. Best of luck!

It doesn't matter how much you go to the gym...weight loss is mostly about how many calories you consume. The gym is great for overall fitness and strength, but to really lose the fat, you must get eating under control.

Are you eating back your exercise calories? You should not net below 1200.
