I am on a 1200 calorie healthy eating regime but its the doctor that has said i don't need to eat much.Im going against everything i know n learnt when i lost 12stone but I'm doing it because my lifestyle has taken a complete turn.I had a major spinal op that has left me unable to exercise and have put weight back on (not as much as i lost tho) so the doctor told me i only need 1 slice of wholemeal toast for brekkie n fruit for lunch n a smaller dinner :0( at the minute I'm always hungry my tummy grumbles like mad i have no energy headache n tired :0( but I'm only on day 5.Hoping the Doctor is right n things will change tho :0( but at the minute sceptical :0/ problem is because i cant exercise or even move about without pain its extremly frustrating as i wS used to 22hrs a week of gym n classes :0/ I'm very frustrated and Angry to be honest i lost so much weight and kept it off for 2 years until the toll of exercising so much n doing so much weight training landed me in the operating table :0( 18 mth later i have been struggling to get my blood pressure down doctor has me on 4 different pills for it :0( and i need to lose some weight again but the only way i know is to workout as i am the type of person that needs to exercise to get weight off as my eating is not that bad so what the hell do i do :0(

Most doctors don't know crap about weight loss and nutrition. If I had 1 slice of toast for breakfast, and fruit for lunch I'd be hungry and cranky and tired too. Even for his recommended 1200 calories you should be able to eat a lot more than that. (though 1200 is pretty low and you may want to reconsider that after some research too). Perhaps you can ask your Dr to refer you to a dietician, someone who actually studied nutrition.
eta: weight loss is mostly about the way you eat. You can lose weight even if you aren't able to exercise.0 -

No matter what anyone on these message boards tells you I don't think it would be a good idea to go against what your doctor told you.
And you don't have to workout to lose weight, you just have to be in a calories deficit. But again, in your situation I would take anything you get here with a grain of salt. Talk to your doctor.0 -

It's natural for us to trust Drs because we assume they know everything about health. Truth is, most of them take maybe a one semester course on nutrition during their entire education. Nutrition is a broad topic and weight loss is just a small part of that.
Without your height/weight, I can't say how many calories you should try eating each day, but unless you have a medical condition effecting your metabolism, you should be able to lose weight, without exercise, eating more than 1200 a day.0 -
i am not sure what you want people to say?
you say you have lost weight yourself, and know how to do it, but then instead of following what you know, you are doing what your doctor days, because they are a doctor.... what they have told you leaves you miserable and hungry, yet you're still doing it...

weight loss = eating less than your tdee.
exercise = fitness.
figure out how much you need to eat, eat that amount, lose weight. Exercise isn't a REQUIREMENT.0 -
Just a thought seeing as you seem very willing to exercise. There are exercises you can do sitting down or at least not throwing yourself around the gym. Tensing muscles etc. You only have to increase your Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT), and you can do that simply by standing instead of sitting. Walking instead of standing. Tensing stomach muscles regularly even. Can you go swimming?0

Think i was just seeking comfort or advise on any chair exercise possibly? Its my back and legs that are the problem :0/0

Well done for your previous weight loss, and if I may, I would suggest you don't fret too much about your weight gain after an op, due to immobility! You'll probably say 'easier said than done'... and it would be true, but I just say this cause stressing about things does not usually help, as we all know...
You say you know everything about weight loss - waow! :-) maybe not eveything since you want some help, lol (I'm smiling kindly, not being a smart alec or anything, meant as joke, please don't be offended :-))
Anyhow, just a suggestion, which you may not be interested in, but since you say your BP is also through the roof, would you consider - and would you be able to - doing some form of seated qigong (you know, the slow, mindful movements you see chinese people doing) some versions of it have been clinically studied (I have some ref to official western scientific journals if you are interested but want to study more) and proven to have a positive effect on BP particularly, but many other aspects of health as well. I know this may go against the grain for someone who has managed to land themselves in hospital from too much exercise if I understood well, but it is worth giving it a go...
Unfortunately, it is a little hard to locate serious, proficient teachers, many people think that by doing a 12 weeks class they've got it, and like any exercise, doing things wrong can be worse than doing nothing. My recommendation would be, if you can afford it to go with Dr Yang Jwing-Ming DVD '8 Pieces of Brocade Qigong' (or you might even be able to watch this on youtube) - it has a set of simple exercise that can be done sitting down, and when you can move a little more, a set which can be done stading up.
Obviously, I am not sure how mobile you are but any activity even minimal, would help you create a calorie deficit.

In my experience, I tend to lose more weight if I eat a bigger breakfast, and have a light supper, way before 19:00 in the evening...

Just had an emergency mri scan so cant do anything till they look at results but doctor said swimming is out because i can only breastroke which is a pull on my back :0(0

Im not been big headed but i do know about 90% of what it takes to lose weight but only in the manner if being completly mobile which i no longer am!!I say 90% as i think new things always come out so there is always new things to learn soi guess when i said i know all that was slightly exagerated x0

theres upper body stuff you could do, boxing is great, but that may still be affected by your back?
for the record, i would use MFP's settings for sedentary and set it to lose 1lb per week and eat that amount, you dont need to starve yourself to lose weight, whatever your doctor has suggested.0 -

I went to an amazing weight loss retreat last year, and they suggested 1200 is an "aggressive" minnimum and not to be sustained for more than a few weeks. They also said if eating breakfast made it harder to stick to my daily goal, just skip breakfast. My Dr thinks eating breakfast is necessary for weight loss because it gets our metabolism going. For me, I get hungrier during the day if I eat early, so I don't. She used to ask me every visit if I eat breakfast, I'd tell her no, she'd scowl a little and say I should. 110 pound down...she doesn't insist anymore.
Now, when I see my Dr, she asks me what I've been doing and takes notes.0 -

My hubby is like that x if he eats brekkie he is more hungry all day but if he skips it he doesnt get hungry till late afternoon x0 -

If your doctor has put you on an ultra-low calorie diet - i.e. around 600 calories per day - there is almost certainly a reason for it. I would go back to the doctor after a couple of weeks and see what they say then.0

The last 5 days i have had one slice of wholemeal toast with clover lighter on for breakfast,fresh fruit salad for lunch n today im having steak n potatoe soup for dinner x0 -
The doctor has also said after a week or so if 1 slice of toast for breakfast i should cut down to half a slice :0/0

Have you considered getting a second opinion? I agree with a number of people on this post: 1200 calories seems awfully low. If you are uncomfortable seeking a second opinion, would you feel comfortable telling your doctor that you are interested in talking with a dietician or nutritionist? One last thing: would working with a physical therapist be an option for you? Is that something your doctor would sign off on if you asked? Hope you can find some solutions.
Just on a personal note, I too am unable to exercise to do a physical condition. Despite that fact, I have lost 12 pounds in the past 60 days. The first 30 days my daily calorie target was 1700 calories. I lost 8 pounds, but I found that target was too low - at least for me. I am 5"7" and I simply needed more calories to function and not feel like I was starving myself. The second 30 days my calorie target was 1850. I've lost 4 pounds in the last 30 days and the 1850 target actually made quite a difference. In fact, many days I was a little under. If you want to view my food diary let me know. You can friend me if you'd like.

I'm guessing by you referring to weight in stones you're based here in the UK? Well we have a right to request a second opinion so request to be seen by another GP, also push for being seen by a dietician (unlikely due to such big financial cuts but always worth a go). If it was a GP you visited they're very much just that; a GENERAL practitioner, they do not have specialised knowledge but a broad knowledge of most ailments. So, although I am absolutely not saying ignore your doctor, I personally would seek a second opinion.0

Thankyou so much everybody x i do have to say when the Doctor told me i was shocked as i was under impression 3 regular meals a day eatting healthy etc was the way togo but with me being physicaly unable to exercise ithought maybe she knows better.And i have to add i was very extreme with my diet when i lost all the weight before,i always made sure i worked iff what i ate n food did in fact become my enemy n i only ate to stay alive :0/ so im scared she is putting me back to what i used to be like when its took me a long time to make friends with food n enjoy it again x the doctor has said once results are back she is refering me to a physiotherapist x and im also under a pain clinic x0
