why were people so skinny in the 70s?

So I'm trying to figure out why people were so skinny about 40 years ago vs today....here are some reasons i can think of and i want to know yours:
1. little to none high fructose corn syrup
2. more activity.....people didnt sit on their computers and smart phones all day
these are just two main ones i can think of, anyone else have any ideas?

I was considered one of the bigger kids growing up. Looking back, we ate "farm" food. And we did "farm" chores, too. So lot of that bigger-ness was definitely muscles. We also played outside: tag, chase, riding bikes, climbing trees (& falling out), swings, swimming,,,,you name it. If it was summer, my shoes came off the last day of school and were never found again till end of August.
Oh. And I brought my lunch to school. And rode the bus. Come to think of it, I STILL brought my lunch to work AND took the bus.

Had no interest in eating when tripping on acid, now when smoking pot I ate many treats, but we did a lot of walking to get that next quarter bag...56

Always active. Didnt watch much tv (only had 10 channels to choose from) didnt have remotes. Walked many places. I dont think sugar has anything to do with it.33

they ate real food instead of packaged crap without perservatives, high sodium, high fat etc. as well as being more active with less technology available. instead of sitting at a computer all day or a tv (from my understanding a tv was more of a luxery at that time), and since the economy was better people prolly had more money to go out and be social, as well as just going out and enjoying the day. less transportation probably which would result in more walking or biking as well (i would imagine). these are just my guesses.29

People had gardens and grew much of there own food and kids played outside constantly. Now days you have to make your kids go outside. It wasn't much eating out like people do now and it definitely wasn't any SUPER SIZE IT. LOL13

Disco for sure , and like the OP said no computers or "screens" other than a TV.... and not as many people had Cable TV, so you spent less time in front of the TV.11

2. No video games.
3. Home cooked meals (from scratch)
4. Kids played outside after school.
5. Parents didn't drive kids everywhere, we rode our bikes or walked.69 -
They ate real food, mostly fresh and there were a lot less genetically modified foods (if any) around. Portion size was also smaller.
Growing up, my mother made home cooked meals every night from fresh ingredients. We had a different dessert every night but none of us were fat. We had takeaway fish and chips every Friday night, but that was the only take away in our lives. Very occasionally went out for Chinese dinner special occasions.
We also played sport and walked to and from school every day. Only had one car in the family so walking was the way to get around. If I wanted to go to a girlfriends house (as a teen), I walked there and back.
Life was much simpler.33 -
Instant satisfaction wasn't available. No microwaves and fast food wasn't eaten very often. Portion sizes were a lot smaller, too. Every meal wasn't a huge feast, unless it was Sunday dinner or a holiday. Cokes were 6-1/2 oz. or 10 oz. for a big bottle and they weren't usually drank every day. There was no Big Gulp. Coffee, tea, milk, water was standards drinks and juice was served in tiny cups not much bigger than a shot glass.
There's so much temptation now and it's cheap, fast and tasty. It created an abnormal public adoration for food.42 -

Drive thru's were not as prevalent. We eat breakfast at drive thru's lunch at fast food places and even dinner. Families existed earlier years where kids weren't involved in more than one sport in school so dinner was a key staple and parents weren't living in minivans driving through McDonalds to feed the kids constantly. Families ate food made at home that was healthier. Food has become more and more processed, flour and sugar today are different, foods have tons of crap in them now then earlier years. Kids played outside and computers were not in anyone's home to sit in front of. Probably a lot of reaons, but I think the way food has changed for our on-the-go needs is the biggest reason.8

portion sizes are bigger today - in restaurants AND at home
people are more sedentary - due to TV, video games, etc.
people drive EVERYWHERE - they don't walk (and we schlep our kids everywhere - we don't let THEM walk)
we eat out more often (and pick bad choices - eat and drink more)
since our butts are parked in front of the TV for longer amounts of time, we're more prone to be brainwashed by ads for snack food (crap food) - OR - we're eating that same junk-crap food while watching TV7 -
We were always out walking everywhere, hanging with friends, encouraged to be active in sports and eating healthier. We always had home cooked meals.4
