Belly dancing?

Has anyone encountered any good belly dancing-type videos that have been a good workout? I feel like belly dancing, though it might make me feel kind of silly, would be a really cool way to shed some pounds.

I love bellydance! Jillina makes a really good video series and so does " Cheeky Girls Productions" w/ Michelle. Also, the "Bellydance Superstars" have alot of good videos. These can all be found on Amazon. Good Luck!0

I was going to suggest the "Cheeky Girls" line too. Michelle's a good instructor . Classes are best but if it's not a possibility I'd try those as a starting point.
LOL, ahsongbird - There *are* some soft-bellied belly dancers out there, but make no mistake it's a hell of a workout. Check out Rachel Brice - nothing soft on her!0 -

Where the mystic beats of Bombay meet the shaking hips of Cairo; the Bellydance Superstars present BOMBAY BELLYWOOD
The Bellydance Superstars have gained an unrivalled reputation for bringing excellence to the art form of Bellydance while pushing the boundaries of the art to greater and greater heights. For the 2010-2011 season this internationally acclaimed troupe add an array of exciting Indian dance styles including Bollywood and Bhangra into their already varied mix of Bellydance styles that include Egyptian Cabaret to American Tribal styles; hence the show title BOMBAY BELLYWOOD. This new show also features the first male cast member in the troupe, Samir (Arthur Gulkarov), previously a principle in the Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil production of "O," as well as noted Indian dancer and choreographer Meera. A wealth of costume changes and great music, fast pace with lots of variety has always been a hallmark of BDSS shows and this new show will follow and add to this tradition. Having performed over 700 shows in 22 countries the Bellydance Superstars truly have lived up to their name. Not only superlative disciplined dancers, they have gained worldwide recognition and now number among the world’s most famous dancers for good reason. We have no doubt that BOMBAY BELLYWOOD will further secure their title as claimed by the Sunday Times of London “The most important dance troupe in the world.”0 -
if belly dancing was that great of a workout.... why are there so many "soft" bellied belly dancers? lol just a thought
A couple reasons
1) Bellydance is something that nearly ANY woman can take up. You have to have a certain body type and start young to be a ballerina. Dancers who cannot do other styles because of knee (etc) injuries can do bellydance, as can women of ANY shape and size. So, you won't see large ballarinas or even salsa dancers etc to a degree, but since bellydancing is o inclusive you will see larger ladies as well.
2) Bellydance is said to help condition the body for childbirth. It's actually better suited for curvy women and of course healthy babies come from women with a healthy amount of fat on them. Under that "softness" there are some strong abs on many of these dancers. The high-visibility dancers have very vigorous routines that keep the rest of them in 'sociatial shape". Even the "soft" ladies are toned underneath and flexible as well.
3) bellydance is for women by women and very empowering and very liberating and all inclusive. So, many of these ladies, discouraged and pretty much shunned from other dance forms and some exercise forms, are welcomed to bellydance and encouraged to show off and flaunt and (GASP!) event expose parts of their body that they gain the confidence to show off regardless of size!0 -
