Making a promise to my dying dog that I'll lose weight

So my dog is nearing his death. It sucks. I told him that I promised him that I would lose weight so I'm hoping this will keep me motivated. I just wanted to know if anyone else on here has ever promised anyone close to them that they would lose weight? Did it help you stay motivated?

Sorry to hear that. It's hard to lose a furry friend.0

I'm doing it for myself - my health, longevity, etc., etc., but I'm really doing it for my husband, as well. (Not that he wants me to lose weight - I just mean that we'll live longer and it will give us more time together!) Whatever keeps you motivated and working!!!0

I am really sorry about the puppy but you do have to do this for yourself. Promise yourself you will do this. Then do it.0

it's a dog. it doesn't care if you are fat or not.0

I think people in this thread are missing the point here.
Yes, you have to ultimately do it for yourself in the end. But if making a promise to your dying dog will help you get motivated, help you through your grief, and keep you going in your down times when you want to eat more (and there will be plenty of those) -- then yes, do it.
No, a dog does not care if you are fat. They love you no matter what. Which is why maybe making a promise to a dog who will not judge you if you fail, if you decide to have that ice cream one time, if you miss a day of exercise, is a much better idea than promising it to another person.0 -
Everyone says "I only do it for me", which I agree with to an extent--we all generally have ourselves in mind first. But I'm sure mostly everyone also has other people in mind....children, spouses, etc. I also don't think it's so far fetched to want to live up to a promise you made---whether it was to a dog or not. If it keeps you motivated, I think that's great.0

I think my cat certainly likes me now that I'm thinner. he has the house to himself more often while I'm out running. when I lift weights at home he can stare at me and make fun of me in his head because I know that's what he's doing. I think it could be a great motivator.0
