I need help

Hey MPFers!

In the past year I have lost 100 pounds. I dropped from 235 pounds down to a low of 135, sadly in the past month I have gained 10 of those pounds back, if not more.

First it started with a complete lack of motivation. For an entire year I had been running 30+ miles a week, 5 or more miles a day, every single day. I loved it, it was an absolutely wonderful experience to just go outside and run. Now I can't seem to do it, every single day I tell myself I'm going to go for a run and I either A...don't go or B, don't finish.

To try and make up for it as best I can until I can find my motivation I'm now walking a lot...in excess most likely anywhere between 5-10 miles a day dedicated walking. I walk at work, I walk at home, I walk for hours. But it's still not enough, it doesn't cancel out the lack of running. I would much rather run, but for some reason I just can't find the motivation to do it. It would be better and easier and funner, I know it would and as an added bonus it takes far less time to run 6 miles then it does to walk 6 miles.

On top of that there is the binge eating, I am constantly starving all day every day. I have spoken with my and dietitian and we are making tweaks and adjustments like incorporating more fat into my diet. My thyroid has been checked and is all clear, but my liver function is all over the place so more blood tests and more ultrasounds. I feel like something is really wrong with me.
Never in my entire life, even when I was heavy have I eaten as much food as I can eat now. Never have I been this hungry. Never have I been unable to feel properly sated on a normal amount of food. Even when I was loosing the weight, I wasn't hungry. I didn't crave anything. I could allow myself to have a cookie or some pizza every now and again without it leading to an total food binge, now I can't if I even look at something tasty...it's a wrap, done and over.

I don't know what to do, so I sit here and I vent to strangers on the internet because for the first time in my short life I feel entirely helpless. The doctor and the dietitian tell me that I need to have patience, but they don't understand that I am running out of time. 10 pounds gained in a month...if I don't fix this soon I'll be back at 200 pounds before my birthday. 12 months to loose the weight, less then 6 to gain it back. Running low on time.

-End rant-end vent-end life story-

  • Our minds and our emotions are sometimes our biggest enemy...It is normal to flucate between 5 to 10 lbs...but we have to be mindful of course our actions can make that number climb up very quickly. Don't beat yourself up, you are human. I too have been struggling with lack of motivation, gaining back the weight that was lost, but we can't live in the past. We have to make a choice to make better choices TODAY...Remember one can lose and maintain weight without exercise. I had lost 30lbs just working out 3 days a week. A lot of studies show you don't actually have to exercise everyday to maintain or lose weight...walking is an excellent way to maintain your weight. Feel free to outreach me, we can help support each other. God Bless.

    Hi there -

I agree that there's no substitute for running. I experienced a foot injury about six years ago that kept me from it until recently, and I never found something comparable. (Spinning was maybe the closest--so if you're just bored with running, maybe try that.)

I'm wondering if you are still logging food as diligently as when you were losing. That might help you keep you head in this and prevent the binges. Set up the same level of structure you had while losing, log before you eat, etc. Maybe you're just not ready for the extra freedom/flexibility and need to ease into it.

Congrats on your loss, and on recognizing the need to get in front of your recent gain.

i lost 50lbs a couple of years ago and then put most of it back the next year. i found that because people kept saying i looked good, i didn't need to bother any more and i like food!
maybe you had such a good feeling when you were losing the weight your mind is subconciously trying to get you back to 'big' so you can be focused on losing again?

will power is a bugger though, i find if i don't log, i binge. now i log everything, even if i have a bad day, i go back and log it all and (hopefully) log it all. the worst is eating excessive and hitting that 'complete' button for it to say how much more i'd weigh in 5 weeks. keeps me focused for the next few days at least!

i agree with mixing up the running with other stuff. i even do e.g. starjumps in front of the tv if i havent done cardio in a while, for the whole episode of whatever i'm watching. i did couch to 5k last year which got me able to run/jog for half an hour. now i don't bother running as i don't like it!

    good luck :)

Sign up to run a 5-k in your area or look for some running friends/group.

Sign up for a 5k! Maybe that will help you to get motivated to run, since you don't want to be the walker that crosses the finish line last.

I'm so sorry you're having a rough time; it sucks when your energy goes AWOL. When you say you had your thyroid checked and it was fine, did they only check your TSH levels, or did they look at T3 and T4? A lot of doctors think that thyroid stimulating hormone is the be-all, end-all, but it's not - if your thyroid isn't producing the proper hormones in response to the TSH, you're as good as hypothyroid. Are you having any other problems, like getting cold, having your hair break, having problems with your nails?
  • Thanks guys for all your support! I actually went for a run today, 3.5 miles. I intend to go for another 2 miler this evening. It was enjoyable...so now all I gotta do is keep it up!

Almostanangel I'll be having my doctor check into that asap...thank you very much.
