Low Potassium

I have chronic low potassium and was wondering if anyone else experiences this? If so, what kind of foods do you eat/drink to improve this. Other than bananas, my doctor hasn't given me many examples. She would also like to see me improve this with diet, instead of a supplement. I have been drinking pineapple juice but it's hard on my stomach (same with bananas and orange juice). Some days my intake is zero, which leads my hands and legs to go numb. Any advicee is welcome, thanks!

Squash has a ton of potassium and it's in season right now so it's a little cheaper. I also make green smoothies with spinach and various fruits. The spinach has potassium and the fruit does too if I choose high pot. fruits. White beans are also good, you could make hummus with them and dip veg or chips into it.

This, plus avocado has a huge amount, probably highest in proportion to the volume of the food.

I eat a lot of lentils, which have high protein (1 cup = the protein of 3 eggs) and high potassium. Beans and vegetables like kale are high in potassium.

I too at one time had very low potassium where my doctor put me on potassium pills (prior to MFP). I started to track it when I joined here and found I was getting 500 to 700 a day. Recommended is 4700. I now get between 3500 to the 4700 a day. I have an open food diary, so help yourself and take a look. (potassium is one of my values). I find on days I am shy on my goal in potassium, I will drink low sodium V8 juice. One 8oz glass has 900 potassium.

Actually, I meant to list coconut water.
If you want a low cal hit of potassium use that. Be careful. It can have unforeseen consequences. ie. keep close to a bathroom untiil you see how it affects you. :)
Check the label though. Some have much less.
  • Thanks for all of the ideas!!! White beans, spinach and squash all sound like yummy ways to get my potassium up.

Wow!!! I didn't realize that v8 has that much potassium! This would be great to add to my diet. = )
