If I eat every two hours (from 6am to 6 pm) can I 1) increase my metabolism and 2) eat less calories and avoid starvation mode?

Meal frequency has absolutely no bearing on weight loss whatsoever.... Hit your caloric intake whenever it fits into your day... Best of Luck

    Yup, TRUE!
Timing won't help you burn more calories, lose more weight, or increase your metabolism.

(But timing does help with other medical issues. I eat every 3 hours when awake, for my hypoglycemia. But it has no affect on my weight loss)

The reason behind the idea of eating every few hours is the idea of food absorbing in a more efficiently. I think protein absorption is probably the culprit for this. Personally i just take my normal meal and divide it in 2 parts. Honestly i have no idea how better eating more frequently helps, if it even makes a difference.

I eat every 3 hours just to make sure I don't get hungry. Works for me (but it doesn't do anything to accelerate the weight loss).

I can eat in moderation without a problem unless I get overly hungry in which case I tend to binge. I do my best to avoid that.

    total fiction ...

meal timing and metabolism have no relation.

you can eat one time per day, six times, or 24 times every hour, and it will have zero impact on metabolism.

FYI - starvation mode is caused by eating nothing for longer than 72 hours, not missing meal one out of six...
  • Ahh, thanks for the feedback. I have found that eating every couple of hours helps reduce the urge to binge eat.

About starvation mode, I heard the body can start to slow down metabolism if a male starts eating less than 1600 kcals a day for too long (at least at my size). Is this true ?

Some studies find reductions in resting metabolic rate when calorie intake is reduced, others do not. Total calorie expenditure tends to go down more than RMR, from a reduction in spontaneous activity (SA) when dieting. Or maybe it looks that way because the SA is calculated by difference and the error is elsewhere.

Either way, the reduction is seldom more than a couple of hundred calories a day.

Not really. You're less likely to overeat because you won't be starving once meal time comes around...but I really don't think it has anything to do with your metabolism. I do better eating every 2-3 hours but only 'cause routine works for me and my breaks at work are scheduled anyway.
  • Yes. It's a fact. Eating more small meals throughout the day speeds up your metabolism more than eating 3 meals per day.

This is totally false. It's one of those fitness myths that just won't go away.

At least read the other responses before posting.

I was told to eat every 3 hours. I guess it depends on what type of training you're doing.
  • Yeah well it works for me. Not only does it prevent binging, it also speeds up your metabolism. What do the other answers have anything to do with my personal experience?

Eating more often does not speed up your metabolism.

There's nothing wrong with eating every 2-3 hours. Just don't tell people that it speeds up their metabolism. It doesn't. This is what we refer to as "broscience."
  • Whatever.

Don't confuse "keeping you feeling full for a few hours" with "speeding up your metabolism"

Fiction. This is broscience that's been handed down from body building sites and the fitness industry. There aren't any peer reviewed clinical studies (that I'm aware of anyway) that show eating frequency increases metabolic rate.

During the week, I generally eat six times a day- a big breakfast, light lunch, moderate dinner, moderate snacks- because it keeps my blood sugar level. I also do strength training and serious cardio in the mornings before work, so I need to make sure my body is properly fueled.

On the weekends, i will usually have three bigger meals and then a light snack, maybe two, because my schedule is different.

I don't know if eating any way increases my metabolism, but eating more frequent meals works well for me.

Oh, I think starvation mode is a whole other story.

The metabolism for anyone starts to slow down once calorie deficit is introduced regardless of size.

Like to see the peer reviewed clinical study supporting this. NOT an article, blog or opinion from some "guru", but an actual clinical study. If not, then you've been misinformed.

It's a myth but some people say it's true. I like it because you
re full all the time and end up eating less.
So in other words it's anecdotal. That's not evidence for it being true.

Whenever I see these "You have to eat 2343472349234 times a day!" threads it just makes me think the OP needs a hobby or a job or something. To quote the wise words of Sweet Brown...
