Total newbie... But rather confused!

Hi everyone!

I'm fairly new to mfp, i've been tracking my food and weight on here for just 7 days. i'm feeling really excited and motivated to finally shift the stone or so that has crept up on me over the last couple of years. All the motivation, before and after pics etc are definitely helping!

I'm just a bit baffled though.

When I started mfp last Monday, I weighed just short of 11 stone. I decided I wanted to lose at least a stone and then see how I go from there but a week in, I've already lost 7 pounds?!?!?! REALLY?! This seems utterly ridiculous to me, I've reweighed myself over and over, on different surfaces etc and even got my OH to weigh himself to check the scales were working properly!

Obviously I'm over the moon to be 10.5 stone instead of 11, I just wondered if this is normal to lose so much weight at the beginning of a new diet?!

you can get an initial water loss especially if you take a lot of carbohydrate out of your diet, that can be worth a few pounds on the scale but will probably re-appear if/when you carb up again.
  • Yes, at the beg. you lose quite fast. Alot of it is water weight. Great job, keep up the good work. You will be there in no time :)

that's what I lost the first week too, I think it is pretty normal. I cut soda out completely, I drink no carbs :)

Ah, that makes sense thankyou! Certainly makes my goal look a little less daunting so I shall see what happens in week 2!

It'll slow down after the first little while, but don't be discouraged. I managed to average about 5-7 pounds a month after the initial faster loss, until I got to my current weight. Congratulations on your initial loss and best of luck to you on your new lifestyle!
