Are most people just watching the calories and having success or are you also doing something else? Like low carb, hcg, phentermine, ect?

just watching calories and exercising..:)0

I am pretty much just watching calories and exercising. I might do one of the specialized diets for a week or so just to mix it up.0
-
I am watching calories, sodium intake, exercising and drinking LOTS of water. Good luck on your weight loss journey!:drinker:0
-
Old fashion way here, diet and exercise. Been conclusively proven to work. My advice, stay away from short cuts.0

I am insulin resistance, so I also watch my carbs (well not really) but I eat from a Low Glycemic Scale of Foods .. and allow Medium Scaled Foods as well... and TRY to avoid High Scale foods (sugary fats) ... But mostly just counting calories, exercising and making better decisions.0
-
I'm keeping my calories down and my exercise up and drinking like a fish (water of course, not the demon alcohol:bigsmile: )
It's working for me, I'm happy.0 -

Ditto! Working for me!0 -
Counting calories and exercising. Well, the program is counting the calories, but I think you get the gist. I would like to think that MFP has taken the old fashion approach of eat less and move more as the weight loss plan. I don't prescribe to the fad diets that say, "Don't eat this or don't eat that" to lose weight. I like the idea of eat it as long as it fits into your daily calories.0
-
Just watch calories and exercise. I also limit my starchy carb intake simply because they are calorie dense, not because they are carbs. For most people a calorie is a calorie don't worry too much about macro-nutrients.0
-
I do Nutrisystem because i work from home and need help with portion control. I dont do any exercise other than walking right now because it causes a huge hunger spike for me and since I am keeping my cals under 1200 I am already cranky from lack of food. Just hit 22 lbs lost though and feeling great!0

I contribute my success to counting calories and exercising 2-3 times a week. In regards to my food of choice, I do try to steer clear of white flour and white sugar, and eat the "perimeter of the grocery store" - fruits, vegetables, lean meats and dairy. Not carb counting, but definitely limiting the types of carbs I choose to eat.0
-
I'm doing reduced calories, moderate exercise, quality food (whole grains, veggies, fruit, plenty of water, quality proteins, good oils), reduced sodium. Now and then I treat Myself to something (cake or candy or clothes or a Jack Black w/Coke back) I'm not a fanatic, I'm a realist, I'm making a Life Time Change and some things I'm just going to have...BUT I CAN control them.0
-
Same as all the others - math with food/exercise...seeing as since, for me, this is a lifestyle change and not a shortcut till I get there and then eat like, well, like a typical american... I have decided that along with counting calories, I try and get in as much non-junk as possible...saying it is off limits is like a dang buzz word. So instead, if it fits in my calorie goal, then it's game. HOWEVER, I find that I am just not that attracted as I once was to the fats and sugars of fried and overly processed foods. Making exercise a non-negotiable and FUN part of my day though has really given me the "sticktoitativeness" that I lacked the BILLLIONS of other times I tried to lose weight and keep it off...aka SUCCEED at ahving a healthy life...
oops...rant over :blushing:

Please don't take offense to this, but that is way too low and unsustainable.
Everyone is on a diet; your diet is what you eat. Some people have good diets and some people have bad diets. When you decide to make the change from bad diet to good diet, it has to be a lifestyle change, not a temporary thing. With that said, do you plan on only eating 1200 calories per day forever? If not, then the weight you lost will likely come back, plus some. Not to mention, since you are not exercising, much of your "weight loss" has likely been muscle loss. To lose fat, you should be eating a few hundred calories below maintenance and exercising (cardio + strength training).
Just my two cents.0 -
Thank you for all the responses. I too am just tracking calories and trying to stay away from useless calories like soda and also doing Zumba twice a week. I was just curious what others were doing. So far I am having much success with it.
You do stop craving bad foods after a while.0 -

Pretty much the same for me. I also try to adjust my base calories slight depending on how active I am. If I am working, I spend a lot of time at the computer, so I try to eat a few hundred less calories for the day. However, if I am awake for longer due to work (I can be awake 20-24 hours of the day sometimes) I eat a little more because I am not sleeping. I eat better calories too, and less junk.0 -

watching calories, light exercise, and using a lot of fresh veggies, fruit, and cut down on condiments0

I work out major muscle groups 5 days a week, abs 3 days a week and 10-30 mins of cardio depending on the day. And i lost 45 lbs. Now I am watching my calorie intake to lose the other 30.0

Though remember what works for someone won't work for someone else. Not all work outs are the same.0

2 words I noticed that don't quite seem to go together are 'Cranky' and "feeling Great".... that confuses me.. Lack of sleep makes me cranky, lack of food means I need to eat more and make wise choices when I do. Feeling great is a feeling I get from making healthy choices and from many other things in life besides.
I wish you well.....even adding in several hundred cals will help you lose the cranky feeling and your body will be sooooooo HAPPY!:drinker:0 -
I have 20 pounds to lose...
In the past, I had great success with a 10-15% fat/25-28%protein/the rest carbs, 1200-1400 calories a day and exercise. Lost 40 pounds and was able to maintain a healthy weight for 7 years. When I turned 40, eating processed food was just wearing me out. I started changing things little by little. Juicing, then trying new foods. Discovered that the Mediterranean Diet lifestyle is the healthiest in all of the world, it's close to God's people and that's what is working for me now. I'm going to lose 20 pounds by reducing my calories, eating rich, tasty, the most healthy and exercise.
I just really want to encourage people to get rid of all the processed foods ie. sugar, sweetners, and deli meats...they aren't good for you.
I hope the best for everyone out there!0 -
i'm working out 5-6days a week and watching calories...21lbs down so far but have hit a block so i've gone today and bought promax to help with lean muscle growth and fat loss...lets hope it works!0

Old fashioned way over here too with a focus on whole, fresh, lean foods.
I work out at least 4 days a week (weight training/cardio) and do something outside (rock climbing, hiking, biking) at least
one weekend day.
Weighing and measuring food is a great way to learn portion control - a kitchen scale & measuring cups are vital. I never had much luck popping a frozen meal in a microwave as a means to teach myself portion control. Mostly because a pre-portioned meal isn't the same as cooking an entire meal & portioning it out for myself. Though, my plan is to cook for life as opposed to
hitting the start button on the microwave. So, I had to figure out how to make it work for me.0 -
I am also pretty new here, I am trying the Spectrum diet by Dr Dean Ornish, a lifestyle plan that also includes exercise, meditation/yoga, and eating very healthy, mostly fruits and veggies. Like I said it is more a lifestyle, he recommends things, but never says the word you have to, it is about choices and empowerment. This is a great plan, by a Doctor that has been shown to REVERSE heart disease, in patients that follow his recommendations. Heart issues run in my family, my mom has CHF, and my maternal Grandmother had sudden death syndrome <heart stops for no understood reason> also several family members with health issues that are largely preventable. I started 3 weeks ago have gone from 206 to 199, and don't feel cheated at all. I have been dancing (Just Dance 1 and 2 for WII) 3 plus days a week, walking more and doin yoga or meditating 3 times a week, with strength training every other day or so. I also have a piece of Dark Chocolate every day.
I hope this is helpful to you, it really is about common sense and making better choices.

No worries Greg, no offense taken. According to this site, in order to lose 2 lbs a week I need to eat 1200 cals a day (that might be because I am now only about 30 lbs more than I should be). And I dont sweat it if I go over that because my vegetable intake was high, only if its because I ate something stupid.
Once I reach goal weight, it wouldn't be 1200 cals a day anymore because that is what I need to do to lose weight, not maintain. Its all math. Once I hit that level then I will take a look at the proper calories to maintain. In addition, I dont formally work out (although in my 'normal' life I do, just not now while I am dieting) because current research and my experience says that the hunger spike after working out isnt worth it. I do, however, walk my dogs several times a day. I doubt I have lost much, if any, muscle. And on occassion I work out, I just am not doing it regularly right now and it isnt how I intend to lose weight. My weight loss plan is to eat the right foods in proper portions. Given that I am not losing more than I should be - 1 to 2 lbs a week, I am good with my approach. If you saw my food diary, you'd see that I eat quite normally. I just ensure that I use vegetables as my filler food.
But sincere thanks for your concern!0 -
