To anyone suffering from Depression

I have recently been diagnosed with moderate depression. I have had a tough year so far. My OH is severely depressed so I have been caring for him, he has recently left work (the big contributing factor to his illness) and started college. He is doing much better than he was. I am happy for him but am feeling very down and finding things hard myself. Work got off to a really bad start this school year (I am a primary teacher) and has improved but is still stressful.
I was losing weight until summer and then I lost motivation and put it all back on and more. Due to money issues I also had to give up my gm membership. I started running but do not particularly enjoy doing it and struggle with the motivation to go outside. I need to lose weight but as I am moderately depressed I am struggling to either get started or keep something up. I am after any tips or guidance please on the types of exercise that help with depression. It cannot involve spending any money though and would be preferably something I can do in a very small living room.
Thanks

Walking outside is the absolute best thing you can do to hlep depression - and is excellent for weight loss too. Running is tough when all you want to do is curl up in a ball inside but a walk helps you clear your thoughts, get some fresh air and you'd be surprised how fit it can get you.0

Hey there I have been diagnosed with depression too. I lost my job because of it, have not been able to be motivated at all because of it. I get depressed because I am over weight so I want to succeed at losing weight have a great plan for the next day and then the day gets here and for some reason I get out of bed at 1pm the day is gone not real hungry but I seem to muster up energy to get something at fast food. So the cycle starts all over again. So I talked to my doctor and she gave me some pill to help curb the appetite. I call it legal meth. I have to follow a 1200 cal diabetic diet but I so far have been keeping my cals between 1200 and 1500. I'm starting off that way because of me being discouraged. As far as exercise i purchased a yoga ball and bounce on that while watching tv playing on computer. This is just the starting point of things because as the weight comes off and the yuk food gets out of my system I know my energy level will go up and then I will want to do more. I used to enjoy exercising. Just take baby steps it is a slow process. Yes we gain weight faster then we lose it but either way it does not happen over night. It is okay to get discouraged if we didn't then at the end we would have no reason to have a victory party or anything to say to others with the same situation. If you mess up remember you can't change it you can learn from it. Another thing I do at the end of the night after I am done logging my foods I write down how I feel ie.. I am hungry i want to eat an elephant i am mad and frustrated because of it. OR I ate to many cal today and I feel guilty my stomach hurts I know I should not have done that. Always end it with a positive like Tomorrow is a different day OR I learned my lesson don't want to feel this way again. I really hope that some of this helps. Sometimes keeping a favorite quote or funny comic with you helps so when your down take it out and look at it. Positive is hard when your depressed I know. Just remember a butterfly flapping it's wings here can effect the weather in Japan just as what you eat today will effect how your body will look in a week.♥0

Im lucky in that I can get to a gym, which I find really regulates my mood and keeps it stable, however, I also walk alot, which I find great for exercise and having a nice quiet time to clear your head/just daydream and enjoy yourself.
You could also try,if you have a computer, going onto youtube and doing any of the workout videos on there.....there is pilates, aerobics, etc, and you can just do it in the room.0 -
First talk to your doctor about starting Vit D if you are not already on it. It has been shown that we do not get enough D thru sunlight and need to supplement. Vit D deficiency contributes to depression. Exercise wise I recommend a zumba class mine are $5.00 an hour and it is a lot of fun and a great work out. If that is not available then walking is also a great exercise. Good luck.0

I've been struggling recently as everything is getting ahead of me and i'm struggling to keep up which is stressing me out and ultimately making me very depressed. The thing that works for me is getting out of the house. Taking my iPhone loaded with all my favourite songs and jumping in the car to some of my favourite places to walk. Fresh air, good music and nothing but clear thoughts in my head! It's the best way for me to exercise and it's the only exercise I do really and it's working for me in a huge way. Try it see if it works for you too. Good Luck!0

Vitamin D is brilliant! it also helps with your immune system. I have not had a cold or anything all year since i started taking them, normally used to have a cold every couple of months! Take vitamin C as well.
After my dad died i went into self distruct mode and did all sorts to keep my mind busy, i later realized it was depression and i was trying to treat it with recreational drugs. The truth is it only got better after i stopped and looked in the mirror and asked myself whats wrong. i promised myself that i would not want to live being depressed anymore and wanted to enjoy life.
Well 3 things happend that helped me to move forward.
1. Find a hobby and get into it.
Asked myself what would make me happy? I need a hobby. So i choose computers and buried myself in magazines, internet, games etc and became a real IT fanatic. Today i earn a small living from it and i enjoy it.
2. Listen to great music
My day sometimes is on a real crazy high and it nearly always depends on the music i listened to in the morning. Feel the love, feel the joy and sing along whilst visualizing all the good things you want to happen to you.
3. Diet & Exercise
i used to eat everything under the sun at one stage in my life and thought i was happy, its only when i stopped eating fast and junk food that i realised my mind was alot clearer and i genuinely felt better in terms of my mood. Now if i feel a spell of depression on i eat fruit, drink lots of water, put some great music and do a little exercise.
See I treated my body like a separate entity and asked myself what can i do to make it flower again and took steps accordingly, See if you can do the same.
They are still days i feel sad but they happen rarely, a wise person told me that whatever goes up must come down and as good as i feel all year round i will still have days where i feel off, i now see it has rest time and use it to heal, relax and contemplate.
I wish you all the best in finding what works for you.0 -
