compulsive eating and T.V.

I have Pinpointed the 1 thing in my life that caused me to gain weight. I can go the whole day eating healthy and getting in a good work out. But as soon as I sit down to watch T.V. everything gets thrown out the window. Its like I cant control myself. I have to get something from the fridge or I go insane.
Ive been thinking about some ways to help fix this like not watching T.V until I can control myself.
Has anyone ever had this problem?

It's the commercials, as well as old habits...like eating popcorn whilst watching a movie...Something has to "give" give-up or give-in or give-way.0 -
don't watch TV for the duration of your diet. Then when you get to maintenance see if you can assign a decent amount of calories for "tv time".0
-
Save most of your calories for later in the day or night time. That way you can eat more and not go over your allotment.0
-
Stock your kitchen with fruits and veggies instead of junk food. You can't eat it if it isn't there. Baby carrots are great to crunch on, frozen grapes make a cool snack, popcorn without butter will give you a pile to eat for few calories.0

Three suggestions for ya!
1) If you meal plan, PLAN to eat a snack during one of your shows. Plan a HEALTHY snack so that you've got yourself covered but after that snack you're DONE! Put a "closed for business" sign on your kitchen!
2) Pick up a hobby that you can do with your hands. I learned to cross-stitch and knit and so instead of snacking I would pick up my knitting and do that instead.
3) Stop watching TV at night (or more than one show per evening). Instead, join a community group, decide to learn something new, work out, create something or whatever. For most of us we eat while watching TV because we're actually BORED. We're not meant to just sit and stare for hours so we stuff our faces instead. Choose your absolute most FAVOURITE shows to watch and can the rest (trust me, after a while you won't miss it) and do something else instead!
Hope that's helpful! You can totally do it!0 -
My problem was that I liked the T.V. food network... which I just can't even look at now.
If Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives comes on... fugheddaboutit0 -

^This - I used to do cross-stitch until my eyes got bad.
Now I play solitaire on my Kindle .....dumb, but it works. Just enough distraction to keep my mind off of food.0 -

This is what I would do. Make sure to still count the calories still.0 -

invest in an exercise bike and replace one of the chairs with it infront of the tv. then if you want to watch tv you must sit and peddle on the bike0

Connect a generator to it, so you actually HAVE to peddle it to watch. LOL Go all Flinstones on it's @$$.
in an idea world i would hook it up to power my laptop. i think there is a serious market for this0 -

omg yes. DDD is obscene food porn and I go crazy in my brains when I watch it. I can watch chopped, though, because that food is usually weird0 -
i am also a TV eater--it helps that I have kids and I make a point that we don't eat in the living room...if i want to watch a show i do in my room which happens to be the farthest from the kitchen..or i take a bowl of popcorn with me and add it to my daily total. (If I have room)
I also keep some weights on the couch and do some lifting during commercials or while I am watching.
keep your eye on the prize..but if you have tempting food in the fridge THROW IT AWAY. I have much more will power knowing there is nothing yummy in my kitchen. but if i were watching TV and I knew there was half a pie in the fridge...i would fixate on it and have to eat the entire thing. screw that.0 -
I just give my hands something menial to do while I watch t.v. or youtube. I level up in a video game, or do a cross-stitch, or I color. Silly stuff, but it works like a dream.0

^^This. I have the same issue. Instead of trying to avoid eating the snacks, I build them in to my calorie goals for the day. I keep water or tea near me and allow myself my one snack and that is it. If I feel like I am going to binge-I go to bed!0 -
Somehow on fast day I always end up watching chopped or top chef marathons. I'm such a moron.0

I buy frozen fruit and will put some in a bowl. Because it's frozen, it takes a while to eat. I can make a bowl last an entire 60 minute show.0

This! I actually plan my workout schedule around what's on the tv. I worked out at 2pm today so I could watch Tabatha Takes Over, lol.invest in an exercise bike and replace one of the chairs with it infront of the tv. then if you want to watch tv you must sit and peddle on the bike0 -
I fold laundry while I watch TV. And I usually read instead of watching TV. However, I have also found I. Rave less food while watching Netflix0

Like someone else said, try to go all day without eating, then when its time to watch your tv, eat your dinner and if you need a snack, I personally like to thaw out a bag of frozen carrots (thaw NOT cook in microwave) sprinkle them with some salt. You can pretty much snack on the entire bag yourself. I prefer the crinkle cut sliced frozen carrots, kinda gives it that "chip" feel.0

We have a DVR. So I try to record my favorites so that I can fast forward and not get drawn in by the commercials. That darn Pillsbury doughboy is just so cute and loveable. I also love watching the food network and chef competitions. .0

i used to sit and eat crisps, loads and loads while reading. or watching tv, or anything that just involved my eyes or ears! even now i can't watch tv without doing something else. it's like my hands get antsy!
i do think that if you have a problem with snacking and tv you shouldnt cut tv out altogeher, but change what you do while you're watching. i do crochet/knitting or other types of crafts. also i've started doing dumbbell exercises while watching tv.
maybe start slow, get the snacks healthier and savour each bite, only have them during ad breaks etc. also, at the beginning of the day work out how much 'snacks' you're going to have later and factor it in. then measure out your snack and don't get seconds!
hope you find something that works for you

This is one of those business ideas that fails. It "seems" awesome, but everyone would hate the *kitten* out of it, and wind up pissed off. LOL
It would be the number one thing returned at stores the day after Christmas.0 -
