OP has a lot to lose...so IMO I would say drop as much body fat as you can and then start a heavy lifting program when you get to sub 220....0

@Iron,
Calm down a bit....
I think the OP has gotten the idea now......
Going to fast can be bad.
Take it easy on lonestar, he is just sharing his journey, as you share yours also......no need to crucify the guy.
I agree. On a side note I would not mind if love handles went last if thigh fat went first.0 -

No worries, I just thought I could relate to the OP a bit and thought I'd give him some encouragement. I see now that I shouldn't have said anything. Lesson learned. See ya.0

You encouraged him to lose 25 lbs of LBM and to feel light headed? And you expect people here not to react to that to the point of flouncing?
Ok!
Hey, I honestly want to thank you because I was considering doing an experiment of dropping to 1500 on a high protein diet trial period of a few weeks to a month. I'm your height and a little less than 190. I'm putting it off for another few weeks because of this thread. No way that kind of loss is what I want to see for myself.0 -
Thank you everyone for the insights and the bit of comedy... I don't know why everyone gets into online arguments but that is neither here nor there.
Let me clarify some things so everyone can understand my situation. I was 350lbs six weeks ago. I have a ton of weight to lose and on top of it all I am in the process of learning how to eat better and use the MFP app to better gauge my caloric intake. I am starting to realize what is and what is not a 700-800 cal meal and I am prepping my meals ahead of time to get better results.
With that said — yes I was taking in very low cals for my meals for the first six weeks and yes I was losing a lot of weight but I don't understand how you can assume I was burning muscle from walking an hour a day at a moderate fat burning zone pace while consuming 1300-1800 cals. I have a lot of weight to lose and on top of it all I do not have dizzy or lightheaded results the other commenter was speaking of.
Another thing — I am an endomorphic body type. So I put on muscle very quickly and I put on fat very easily. In other words if I eat 8-10oz of lean meat, complex carbs, and veggies at every meal 6x a day with egg whites and oatmeal in the morning I put on muscle extremely easy without the use of whey shakes or casein. If I look at a donut my *kitten* will jiggle for a week. So to the commenter that said it is very hard to put on muscle — that is not the case with me — perhaps with your body type and the body type of those around you it is but I am sure that I am fine.
For everyone else, thank you for your comments. I appreciate the feedback. I will take what I want from this and continue doing what I am doing until I can catch a good flow and my caloric intake of 1900 cals (as suggested on MFP to lose 2lbs a week) becomes habit.
What I was simply trying to get at in my original post was — I eat 1800 calories but then sometimes based on my fitbit tracker and the minutes of exercise I log into MFP database — it says I burned 1200 cals. Currently at this stage, being 290lbs, I am not hungry after a work out. I can not see myself having to eat another 1200 calls to replace what I burned to stay within 1900 cals for my goal. Nor can I see myself eating an extra 1200 cals before a workout. I am not dizzy. I am sweating profusely. I am getting in great work outs without the use of weighted resistance for now. Once I get into the 220s I will then incorporate weight training to sculpt and add definition.
With my loss of 60lbs I do not see any lose or saggy skin. I do however see that most of the weight is coming off my face, neck, arms, shoulders, my wrists, and even my lower legs.
This isn't my first rodeo. I know what is and what is not healthy — I am not a child. I was simply asking do most of the guys who were in my position (if any were +300lbs) found it hard to burn belly fat, love handles, and lower back fat? And if when they got in a good work out did not feel the need to replace the cals they burnt to stay at their goal.
Thanks.0 -
Good luck with your goals mate.
I don't know how fit bit and other things work in regards to exercise calories....
But I would not try to eat back 1200 calories.
1200 calories to me sounds like what an NFL player does in practice........
Just seems like a lot, but I could also be very wrong.0 -
also, I will say this for me.
After I workout, I don't have much of an appetite....but I do force myself to eat, cause I know I need it.
But you are not in the same spot I am in......
So if you choose to wait a bit post workout to eat.....then I think for now you are gonna be fine.
But once you do get your weight under control, and down where it should be.....then your body may very well look to muscle for energy post workout......and that you don't want.0 -
I couldn't agree with you more. When I used to be 220lbs years ago I would always have that starving feeling after running 10k and doing strength training with weights. Right now, I assume, I am not as hungry after a hard work out and eating lower calories because I have so much fat storage that my body is using as energy.
Thanks again!0
