A lot of folks when they run bring their hands up high and clench their fists...this results in the shoulders being "shrugged".

Really focus on only touching your thumb and 1 other finger (no fists)...your elbows should have a greater than 90 degree angle...I brush my thumbs against my hips to make sure the arms are relaxed and I dont have a side to side swing with my arms...and every few minutes roll your shoulders back and down to bring them away from your ears and open your chest (but don't lean back when you do it...always keep that forward momentum). Also as you get stronger it wont ache so much either...any new position can be uncomfortable.
  • I run holding my water bottle but not too tight, it must b my arm position i hold my arms at about 60 degrees but it felt loose and comfy so didnt think that was causiny it .
    Thanx for reply :)

Definitely try and relax your shoulders consciously every few minutes, I find mine are often tense even when I don't realise it.

I came home from a longer run (for me!) the other day and my jaw was so sore - I realised after the fact I must have been clenching it for extended periods of the run!!

Sounds like you're doing what I call 'running high and tight'. As others said, relax your shoulders, maybe drop your arms down and shake them out every so on. I also tend to cramp up on my right side when I hold a water bottle. Something about it throws off my gait slightly.
  • Thanx for your replys guys , my arms didnt feel tight the way they were sitting i dont really swing them they barely move an inch il just need to learn to shake arms out every so often.
I describe my run as a hippo out of water lol not very gracefull but i get the butt moving :)
