There is no way I burned that much, is there?

So, I decided to go for a jog today and wore my heart rate monitor (it's a sportline; it was cheap and I'm on a tight budget). . . And it said that I burned 713 calories. I just jogged for about 40 minutes or so. I did keep a pretty steady pace, heart rate averaged out at about 180 bpm (also I weigh 187lbs at 5'4", if that makes any difference). Does that seem right? My mind is absolutely blown, if that is in any way accurate. Is it possible I just wasted money on an inaccurate piece of junk? So confused. lol
(Also, didn't know if this was the right place to post this, hmmm.)

Look here for a comparison...

If you know how long you jogged and how far you went, you can get an estimate.
For me, I weigh 176 and run at an 8:30 pace. That would be:
Distance: 4.7 miles
Duration: 40:00
Pace: 8:31 / mile
Calories Burned: 6260 -

Not the slightest idea how far I went, didn't even think to look. I guess it isn't at all unlikely that I burned that much. Awesome! Thanks. Next time, I'll have to make note of how far I ran, just to be sure.0 -

If you ran 6 miles in those 40 minutes, you're golden.
If you didn't, scale downwards accordingly.0 -

Assuming you averaged 180 BPM, that's possible. I would say that 180 is pretty high HR to sustain on a 40 min run unless you have a really high max HR and it was a challenging pace.
You should google earth/ google map your route. Knowing how far you ran is pretty important to this situation.
For comparison, to show that big numbers are totally possible, I ran today:
10.5 miles in 1:22 (7:48/mile)
avg HR 167
calories burned 13020 -
Nice time... My last 10 mile run was at an 8:28 pace.0

I keep these links on hand to double check when I'm not sure I trust my gear;

And check the calculator at the end.
Your numbers seem to match. nice work!0 -
Jogging for 40 minutes I burn about 300 calories according to the treadmill and I'm thinking even that is a pretty high estimate.0

Last run I did, I averaged a HR of 172, and I was burning 15 calories a minute. I am 5'7 and 170 lbs. Over 40 minutes, that is 600 calories for me (but at a lower HR to what you had, and a lighter weight).
By the way - congrats for getting out there, regardless of the exact number!0
