So, awhile back I posted in motivation and support about a conversation I had had with a nurse at my OB/GYN office about Mirena and my new found love of weightlifting. At the time, I felt I was a ways away from lifting over 100 lbs but add they was my intention I was concerned to how Mirena would hold up with it. My conversation went something like this...
"Hi, I was looking into getting the Mirena birth control but had some questions in regards to weightlifting. I intend to lift over 100 lbs. Would that be okay with it?"
"Ya, it wont fall out. I've never heard of a woman lifting over 100 lbs, you'll be fine." She starts to laugh. "Hold on, let me ask the other nurses. " I was not put on hold. Instead, I get to hear her and the other nurses having a good laugh at my expense.
Fast forward to a month ago when I go to get my Mirena. The same nurse that laughed at me is there. The doctor is praising my weight loss and asked how I was achieving it. I told her I was calorie counting and weightlifting. I could see that look on the nurses face. My doctor asked if I had any questions. Casually, I said, "Ive been deadlifting 115 lbs, should I hold off on that for awhile?" The nurses face went blank. It was the single greatest moment of my weight loss journey. The doctor suggested a two week wait in lifting until things got settled but my goodness that felt awesome to admit. I'm still a noob. I'm still far from where I want to be lifting-wise but it's a start!

First pic is me after my six week post partum check up after having my now, 5 month old son. The other two are last Sunday.
I know my journey to be fit is far from over but a big thank you to all the badass lifting ladies on MFP who've inspired me to never let someone's ignorance stop me from my passion

When I surpassed 100 lbs I felt great! ...now I can't wait to DL my bodyweight. Well done!! How unprofessional and ignorant of those nurses. So glad that you proved them wrong!0

Good for you! Wow... that's a lot of weight to lift and you look great. I struggle with 20 lbs!0

This is great- the women on the Stronglifts 5x5 would love this story
Congrats- you look great & there is no better way to 'educate' (and shut up) a doubter than to show them.
Rock on.0 -
That is awesome! I would love to have seen the nurse's expression LOL Kudos to you!0

That's amazing!!! You're an inspiration to all of us strong women out there
I'm working on upping my weights too. I have VERY strong legs and used to push 380 on the leg press...for a very short girl like me I was SOO proud. Need to get back to that!!
Meanwhile, WHAT A BIATCHH!! Where has she been- under a rock?? "I've never heard of a woman lifting 100lbs..." Umm...clearly nursing may not have been your best decision...wow0 -
Thank you all so much! I hope that at least humbled her to the fact that women can be powerful and I've seen women deadlifting 300 lbs, so she obviously had no idea what she was talking about! Love all my lifting ladies
l. I just couldn't believe she would say something so hurtful, especially since I'm just starting out. I've been lifting for about 4 months now and I remember in the first month being proud I could bench 50 lbs. My mother then insisted to not go past that as I would become "bulky". Well, thanks to this website, I've seen the effects of lifting on women and it's dead sexy!! I'm up to 75 lbs on bench now! Rock on strong chickas!

1. Congratulations!!! WTG!
2. Yup, she didn't know what she was talking about; I don't think she was trying to be hurtful. Most people are not educated on weightlifting.
3. Yup, have had many friends tell me I need to stop lifting so heavy; "that's why you're bulking up". That's when I turn to my mentors/inspiration and watch/learn from their progress.
It took me over 7months to go from DL 95# to 150# (PR today). (I'm 4'11").
--> **You can do it!!!**

This is a great story and what a metaphorical slap in the face to that ignorant nurse.
People say some really dumb stuff, I'd like to say maybe she has learn her lesson - but I doubt it.
