I would like to try a Tabata / HIIT style workout but I can't really do high impact exercises ( bad knees - jumping jacks and vertical jumps are not so good for me ). Does anyone know a DVD that I could do?

The Turbo Fire HIIT workouts have a modifier you can follow. Still high intensity, but not necessarily high impact.0

As someone with a bad knee, I have never ever found effective HIIT routines that aren't pretty high impact. I personally would work on strengthening your knees (in conjunction with a PT) so that you don't have to worry as much and have a greater choice of exercises. You may never be able to do vertical jumps or walking lunges, but you can build up strength depending on the type of knee problems you have, by strengthening the muscles that support the knee.0

Tabata works with all exercise. you could youtube a tabata timer, or timer with music. so that you know the intervals and pick four different exercise you are comfy with. Do each exercise once for with the timer, then repaet each exercise: thats four mins : one tabata set. then repeat the four mins as you see fit. the great thing about tabata is four mins is enough as each time you do it you push yourself to your limit. But you can also add to the sets and do say five sets at 16 mins. perhaps try : faux jump rope, tricep dips, Butt kcikc, and Russian twists weighted... none of these have high impact on the knees .. but like i said any exercise you are comfortable with works as long as you push yourself in each twenty second segment.0

Butt kicks and faux jump rope absolutely have high impact on the knees (assuming you're leaving the ground for jump rope at all). If someone can't do jumping jacks, they probably cannot do either of those.0 -

Fair point! I have a friend who has knee problems and is ok with these ... I was trying to stray away from squats and lunges type thing. Even with a knee problem some cardio is needed, and all cardio involves using the knees. and also a good way to strengthen weak parts is to gradually work them, not ignore them! a tiny faux jump rope on the balls of the feet is a good place to start!
So lets say then : light weighted punch jabs fast with weight n the butt and slight bend in the knee, tricep dips, mountain climbers and Russian twists weighted.0 -
Thanks guys! I'll give Tabata a try. My knees are choosy ones :-) - I have no problems doing squats, even lunges, but anything that requires both feet to leave the ground is going to cause some pain.0

Mountain climbers! Or burpees without the jump up, just out!0
