AM Workout Struggles

Does anyone else struggle with getting their workout done in the morning? The times that I have, I feel GREAT throughout the day and so glad I got in done right away. I typically have an easier time staying on track eating as well.

However, the times that I actually get my booty out of bed in the morning to workout are few and far between. I tell myself that I can just do it after work, but half the time that doesn't happen.

I"m looking for any tricks that anyone may have to help get them motivated in the morning.

HELP!!

I workout early AM and it's hard, but it's the only time I have. Honestly, get a good night's sleep. Don't be going to bed 10, 11 at night and then expect to get up at 3:30 or 4 am and go workout. Be in bed by 9. You can try keeping a glass of water and caffeine pill by your bed so when you hit the alarm you take the pill and you won't stay in bed for much longer at least. It's all a state-of-mind, you just have to force yourself out of bed and that's the only trick.

Agreed. I had a problem being a morning person I was able to change it because I forced myself go to bed at 9.

It takes a week or so but once your body gets adjusted you'll feel a whole lot energetic.

I suggest also having a early dinner say before 7 PM , if after 7 PM try to eat light. That has helped too.
Again, its going to be difficult for a week or so and after that will be fun.

Habit, mostly. My alarm is set for the same time every morning, even if I'm not working out. Your body gets used to waking up at that time and going to bed at the right time to get the right amount of sleep.

(I definitely don't go to bed at 9pm, but I'm one of those people who doesn't need a lot of sleep. I usually go to bed around midnight and my alarm goes off at 6am.)

I started waking up a little earlier everyday. Once your body gets used to it, it will get easier. Also make sure you're going to bed at a decent time. Staying up too late makes it even harder to get up.

I have tried morning workouts, like ~6am....
I just can't.....I don't feel right and don't feel like I have any strength.

    Wish I could though

    Alarm clock.
Even if you're groggy, it still counts

My workouts are far more productive in the afternoon or early evening. If AM was the only time I could do it, that would be one thing...but I pretty much make time later on in the day...mornings are hard enough for me as it is.

One more week of the insanity program and I have gotten up at 4am, yes FOUR in the morning to do it. I go to bed by 9, and I feel AMAZING knowing the rest of the night/day I can relax. That's what pushes me through. I don't like to be a "quitter" so I made sure a lot of my family knew I was doing this program so I made sure I couldn't just quit. I have my HRM, shoes, socks and sports bra ready and wear my shorts and tank to bed. So I am pretty much already dressed. Although it does sometimes take me a little to wake up, but I do it!
  • I second, third, fourth, or whatever getting a decent night's sleep.

I've found having everything ready the night before is also effective. This time of year I run in the afternoons so I ride my bike on the trainer in the mornings and have my clothes and shoes next to my bike, so I just toss on a sports bra, cycling shorts, socks, cycling shoes, and go. As a bonus, I can eat a granola bar while on the bike, so I'm pedaling and having breakfast before I even know I'm fully awake. Also: that's the only time I can watch SportsCenter, as a personal rule, so if I don't get up and get on the trainer, I lose out on my SC time.

I get up really early to workout as well. I try to go to bed pretty early which helps a lot.

Coffee is my other trick :drinker:

I am totally unable to wake up early... it might change in the future but right now, I have two kids (including a 1-year-old who still gets up 1-2 times a night), I work fulltime and I'm a full-time student (while also running a household and maintaining my end of a marriage!) so going to bed before 11 or 12 just isn't feasible. I workout when my daughter goes to bed, around 7pm. It's just what works for me! Sometimes I wish I could get up in the morning but no matter how hard I try, it's just not happening right now.

I get up M-TH at 4:15 to workout, 5 on Friday.

    No tricks.....

IMHO either you want it or you don't.

Best quote I've seen this week: "People have always been working labor jobs for long hours. There are single moms working two jobs and still finding time for their kids. There are soldiers that fought for our country that were hungry, tired, thirsty, and with pieces of steel stuck in their bodies, bot somehow they were able to pull it together for combat. Why can't you get your **** together for an hour and do a couple sets of squats." - JW

I was up this AM at 4 to go running, I leave the house for work/school by 7:30am.

    My tricks:
    * I must get to bed before 10, 9pm ideally.
    * I must lay out all my clothes/gear the night before so I can roll out of bed and get dressed
    * Stop looking for excuses to skip the workout

I find when I do this for about a week I'm in the habit and usually wake up before the alarm.

It's painful but I just force it. Feels great once done and out of the way for the day. I think my alarm clock helps, it makes noise and simulates day light. Kind of hard to stay asleep with a bright light in your face.

Here is what works for me:

    -Decent night's sleep
-Find something that you really enjoy doing (I think this is key)
-Lay out EVERYTHING (not just clothes but socks, shoes--everything down to the hair ties, etc.)
-Get yourself up and start dressing before you even give yourself a second or third chance to go back to bed.
-Put alarm clock far away so that you have to actually get up to shut it off
-Just start working out/warming up before your mind/will messes with you

I feel you! I have struggled with this too, but I rather work out at 5:30 AM than at 6:30 PM. I just have a better work out and a better day. Sure there have been mornings where I get a bad night's sleep and will opt out of the early AM work out but if that happens I make myself go to the gym, a run or whatever after work. And then I remember why I work out in the AM :)

-I echo the whole get a good night's rest thing.

-Lay out what you will need for the work out, if you are showering at the gym have all that stuff ready to go

-Set up your coffee maker to already have it made by the time your alarm goes off and have a cup of coffee prior to starting your work out.

-Focus on how you will feel after! You will be so proud of yourself, you can get home from work and relax guilt free. It is amazing. Also, you will get your metabolism racing right away!

I hear you! I usually workout early in the mornings and I find my biggest struggle is getting out of bed. This is what helps me:

    -Get a good night's sleep
-Get everything ready the night before (workout clothes, work clothes, breakfast, lunch, coffee maker, towels, workout equipment, etc.)
-Set two alarm clocks on my phone as I like to hit "snooze" a lot. (and yes, set it far from you so you have to get up to shut it off)

I used to have the same issue Just like you I found when I worked out in the AM my whole day just went better. I finally just made a decision that it was either get up at 4:30 or be out of shape the rest of my life. I may become skinny without the gym, but I wouldn't be in shape. I started going to bed at 8:30 and I can say that now I am usually awake before my alarm goes off.

^^this! If I have everything set out the night before I get out of bed much easier!

Everyone seems to agree! You just have to build those new habits. It is HARD to change but it gets easier and the benefits are well worth it. I go to bed around 10:30 and get up at 6:00am. Ideally I wake up before my alarm at 5:40-ish and watch the news for a few minutes to allow myself to fully wake up. That is what happens most days. I set out my gym clothes the night before. And whatever I do, under no circumstances do I use the snooze button! That is the kiss of death! After a few weeks your body adjusts. Morning workouts are just the best. I can't imagine doing it any other way now!
