Can someone point me to a good resource for an HIIT program/ how to do it properly/ how to get started with it?

I understand the concept, but not how to actually do it as a workout.

I am limited to ellipticals/ ARC machines/ bikes due to very bad knees and pain from running/ high impact exercise.

Thanks!

Great topic and great responses here! Would someone be able to critique my current routine below? I've been doing a lot of different variations, but this is what I feel (for the most part) has been working. I'm thinking of elevating a bit more but this is how it stands right now. Also, I work out Tues, Thurs, Sat, Sun and follow-up this session with weight training. Not sure if that makes a difference:

    15 Minutes (No Warm Ups)
The machine is at a static Level 9 except at the end

    Min 0 - 3: 85 RPM
    Min 3 - 5: 70 RPM
    Min 5 - 6: 90 RPM
    Min 6 - 8: 75 RPM
    Min 8 - 9: 90 RPM
    Min 9 - 12: 75 RPM
    Min 12 - 14:30: 80 RPM
    Min 14:30 - 15: MAX @ Level 13 (110 to 120 RPM)
    3 Minute Cooldown (Level 9 @ 55 to 60 RPM)

Thanks in advance for checking this out and for any advice!

    On a stationary bike.

    2.5min moderate pace (level 6)
30 sec all out (level 11)
    2 min moderate pace
    repeat 6 times
    2.5min cool down

i used to do a 2:1 ratio but recent studies have shown that the optimum rest period is 2-4min certainly better since swapping to this from 1min rest/30 sec sprint.

Fitnessblender.com has a lot of free (full-length!) workouts, most of which are built around a HIIT format.
