Advice on finding time for exercise?

  • Getting up earlier is not an option, I'm not a morning person at all.

I think it's time you become one.
  • It's not always about whether or not exercise is a priority for someone.....obviously it is for everyone on here or this topic would not spark our interest. As a full-time working (traveling) mom with a 2yr old and 3yr old I I00% understand. Time for some of us is very limited. When I am in the office I eat at my desk and spend about 30-45min exercising on my lunch which usually involves a walk. I also travel a lot so I have been looking into simple exercises I can do in my hotel room or use the hotel gym. Another suggestion is to YouTube exercise videos and do that instead of TV in the evening. Just some ideas, hope that helps :-)

Thank you! I'm glad at least one person understands. There seems to be more criticism than encouragement on this forum. The problem for me has been that I leave the house at 8am, work from 9am-5pm with no lunch break, hour drive to school and class from 6pm-10:30pm, then home again around 11pm. I do this Monday-Friday and end up working on the weekends most of the time as well, so time and energy are an issue for me. And I'm a single parent.

When I didn't have class during the summer, I would go for jogs in the evening before dark and it made me feel good. The most I can think to do now is park at the back of the parking lot on the other side of campus from where my classes are and do a brisk walk across campus to get to class on time, but it just doesn't seem like enough. I just thought somebody might know of certain exercises that would still make a difference even when done in short spurts.

I have delayed sleep phase syndrome. Always have. When I say early mornings aren't an option, I mean they are medically not an option. This is something I have no control over. I was more looking for suggestions on exercises that can be done in 5 minute or less spurts throughout the day that won't be meaningless.

Do 10 solid minutes of pushups, situps, and jumping jacks for 10 straight minutes, as fast as you can, first thing in the morning when you get out of bed, five days a week. You'd be amazed at what those 10 minutes will do for you, and there is no way you you can't figure out a way to squeeze 10 minutes like that, right in your bedroom, before you shower or get dressed or whatever.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to be forced to work from 9 to 5 without a lunch break....at least in the few states I have worked in, it is. Why don't you get a lunch or even 15 min breaks for that matter?
  • I understand, Mon to Fri I'm a slave to work from 6.30am-7.30pm including travelling time, but I squeeze as much exercise as I can in that time.

Can you use a bike for your travelling? I commute part way to work on my bike to add some exercise, in fact 40-50 mins per day on my bike.

Walk at lunch time, I walk for 15 min for go and buy my lunch most days.

You said you do house work, could you make it more vigorous to turn it into cardio exercise?

When weekends come, I have my 4 kids from Friday night till Sunday night. I will take them all swimming on Saturday, I will swim 2-3km while they splash about. I often walk to and from the swimming pool to add exercise.

If you aren't getting to sleep until later on anyways, get your workout in at 11 when you get home.

Do a video and keep the volume down so as to not wake anyone up.
    Do body weight exercises.

If this doensn't work, fit it into the middle of your day as some have suggested.

Nike had it right when they said just do it.

I know how you feel. I am the same way. I would like to exercise to help boost weight loss and keep fit, but I hate exercising and I find it hard to make time for it because when I do have time I am either tired or would rather be doing something else. So what I do is whenever I am in a situation where I am "waiting" on something, like laundry, I do jumping jacks. I try to do to at least 50, but if I can keep going I keep going, or I take a pause and then try to do 10 more... take a pause and do 10 more. Jumping jacks are easy, you don't need equipment, you don't need a lot of room, you don't have to go anywhere. While you are at your desk at work or at school, you could stand up and jog in place or do lunges. You could do situps or crunches before bed - should only take a few minutes of your time. Even a little makes a difference, so I am sure there are times when you have to wait for something like laundry, or your kids to finish their bath, or dinner to finish cooking, or whatever. Take those few minutes to just do something like jumping jacks, lunges, situps, crunches, or arm workouts. I actually read an article in a magazine once a workout routine that Lady Gaga does. It takes about 30 minutes:

You do 5 minutes of cardio like jumping jacks or jogging in place (I use my smartphone as a timer)

Then you do an arm workout (lifts with weights, pushups, etc.) - pick a number/amount of reps you feel confident you can do, like maybe 10-20 pushups

Then you do a belly workout like crunches or situps - same theory, do an amount you feel you can accomplish

Then you do a leg workout like lunges or leg lifts - same as above, do an amount you feel you can accomplish

Then you do another 5 minutes jumping jacks/jog-in-place.

BOOM! Then as you get used to it, you can start to up the numbers of reps you do for each area of the body - and maybe add another minute to your jumping jacks/jogging.

Since it only takes about 30 minutes, and you'll probably work up a sweat, maybe do it before you shower if you shower after work or before bed. But whenever you think you can spare 30 minutes, give it a try!

    Good luck!!!!

sounds like you are super busy, make the housecleaning into some exercise: put on some music and dance all through the house while doing it. Try spending time with the spouse and child by doing non food activites or non sitting in front of the tv time like taking a walk or going to the park, etc. It can be done, you just have to prioritize what is important to you. Maybe catch some studying time on the treadmill while walking slow (so you don't fall down). Park farther away in parking lots to add in activity. Take stairs instead of elevators. Focusing on what you eat may be your best tool right now while you are so busy but don't rule out any opportunities to be more active. You can also split up cardio throughout the day, for example the time it took you to post this question was approximately five or ten minutes... that could have been a time you went for a brisk jog/walk or did ten minutes of tae bo, yoga, jumping jacks as someone else mentioned. etc. it can be done and yes it counts.

If you watch TV, stop doing that and exercise during that time instead.

I understand too and I think people can be pretty unforgiving on this website. I'm a full time worker full time mum with husband away, we have the ballet classes (hers not mine!) and birthday parties in the weekend, house to clean blah blah. I've been working out about 5 x a week and am knackered. yes you can make it a priority and you can find the time but man do we really all have to be superhuman the whole time to keep fit?
I've just decided to have a week off completely then cut back to 3 x a week. I'm thinking from you post you can definitely make one good workout in the weekend, so maybe you could do that - tell yourself one workout in the weekend - maybe a longer one if you have more time then. And then 2 30 min ones in the week. Sure you're not a morning person but maybe once or twice a week you could push yourself to be, or fit in something between job/study. It doens't have to be all or nothing.
